This is what happens when people DON`T carry a knife

Nah, don't worry about it dude! Moderators have better things to do with their time. Comment on the earlier thread if you wish. Personally, I agree with you. However, these folks had been married fifty years, so they were likely in their seventies. My Mom is near eighty and doesn't carry a knife. She does keep a S&W .38 handy though. That would put a kitty's eye out.

I would name this

What happens when people don’t carry a gun!

I like my knife, but a mountain lion has at least 20, not counting teeth.

"You really don't need to carry a walking stick, folding knife or pepper spray."

All told to me by park rangers in the Punchbowl, Sequia Nat'l Forest and Yosemite.

To which I always say, thanks officer, have a nice day.

I'm just curious but why kill the animal AFTER it has attacked a human? During the attack and immediately post-attack, absolutely lay her out, but why hours or days after? Seems kind of superfluous. Also, were they in a restricted area? Wouldn't there be warnings about mountain lions in the area? Forgive my ignorance, and know I'm definately no tree-hugger, it just doesn't seem right. Don't mean to hijack the thread either...

Large predators tend to be repeat offenders once they discover humans are tasty and that most are easy pickin's.
How would you like to live in an area with a large cat that has no fear of man and a prefernce for white meat?

The real shame is that they often end up shooting several in the area to make sure they get the right one. Mac

I'm just curious but why kill the animal AFTER it has attacked a human? ..
The oldest of reasons....

The fear of man,,,as long as animals have it in them we put up with them being close around where we are.

But once we believe that an animal has lost the fear of man, then that animal must die.

Once they eat human flesh, and understand just how easy we are to kill, then they have to go, it comes down to the question of "us or them".....

It's not just wild animals too,
I have dogs...they are nice big dogs, I love them.

But,
If one of my dogs bites me, I will shoot it.
Because, well, I have to face the facts of life, that being that my dogs are the size that they well could perhaps kill me or my wife if they really wanted to. Im very sure they could kill little kids.
Therefore the lives they have depend on the fear of man they carry inside them.
They know not to bite anyone.
They fear what we can do...
Fear of man is what keeps us from killing them, it keeps them alive.

That makes sense. It is sad that they have to kill more than just the one that made a snack out of a human. I guess it is up to us to protect us and them as well. Thanks for the clarification.

Hand to "Hand" with mountain lion will only go so far. If he had a defensive caliber handgun he very likely would not have needed the hospital at all, assuming he used it properly. Of course, San Fran County happens to be one of the hardest places in Cali to get a CCW permit.

My point being that if a cougar attacks a human,
We all think animals are so nice until we become their dinner...LOL

We have seen on the TV news that they have spotted a few cougars in my area. This is a new thing, for you have to go back 100 year or more to hear such a story of a big cat being seen around here.

The cops took a photo of a cougar walking on the road at night, the moment the cougar saw the cop it ran away...."As it should"

If anyone in my state gets attacked by a cougar? , Then that same cop next time will pull out his gun and shoot the cat dead.

Thats the facts of life.
The fear of man keeps them alive.

Yes! A sharp knife is sometimes needed to hold a savage beast at bay!

Of course, San Fran County happens to be one of the hardest places in Cali to get a CCW permit.

This didnt happen in Sanfrancisco it happened in Humbolt County which is about 200 miles north of the bay on 101. It is a very different California from the bay area.

I am pretty sure that obtaining a ccw is the same as it is in Mendocino county were I live. A two day class and a back ground check Is all it takes. No important friends or special needs are necessary.

If you leave the major metro areas CA becomes a very different place.

Oh yeah I saw my first mountain lion yesterday. It was about 300 yards from a house on a vineyard in sonoma county, where it is next to impossible to get a ccw. Lucky me mine is good thru the whole state.

I used to work with the military working dog program and the rule of thumb there was...if you got bitten, it was your fault. The dog was just doing what dogs do. I think the same applies here. He was in the mountain lion's space not vice versa.

There's a story about an indian chief, I only remember the gist, not the particulars but I'll bet somebody here can re-educate me. He goes to Washington DC to meet with a politician and they sit on a bench next to one another. The chief moves very close to the pol and the pol moves away. Then, he does it again...then again...until the pol has one cheek hanging over the edge of the bench and has had just about enough from this insolent savage. He says, angrily, "Hey, stop that! You're not leaving me any space!"

The chief says, "Now you understand."

That's what we're doing to our wildlife. If we think having raccoons in our trash and coyotes eating our housepets is inconvenient...just imagine how they feel.
