My main concern this time of year is an injury forcing an overnight stay so this is what I always carry when hiking during this season !

This shows most of the contents, stuff not shown is a Buffalo windshirt,Basic first aid stuff and a Jet-scream whistle.

This time of year my priority would be to get a fire going, this shows the contents of my fire starting kit....

Other items I always carry are a hat, gloves and a buff......there is also a small LED Cyba light torch on my car keys !;)

Forgive me for asking, because I really don't know .... Is that a pencil sharpener above the matches? If so, what is it's intended purpose? Thanks. -Matt- Does look like quite a handy assortment if you get caught by surprise!

Use it to make shavings (tinder) out of pencil sized sticks; I have never tried this myself.

Yes that's correct billym ! In fact it was a tip I picked up elsewhere on this site !!!!:D

Thanks billym! I never even heard of it. But then, that's why I read here, you guys are a wealth of info! -Matt-

Hi there i do carry two sharpeners. They work realy realy good. Very easy to start a fire. What i would do is while walking i would pick a stick or two that look the right size. When i need to make fire i would just make some tinder and light it up. Its about as easy as using the cotton balls. You also never run out of tinder this way. One of the best idea for fire making out there but thats my one cent worth.

Where is your extra clothing? I see gloves, but no
earband, knit cap, wind or rain gear, garbage bag.

It looks like good equipment, but it is minimal.

What climate/environment are you in?

Nice pics. In my own bag I carry some energy bars and dog food, a canteen cup, micropure tabs, and large plastic bags along with most of what you carry. Good job!

The climate where I live is moderate, even at this time of year the night time temperature rarely dips below zero!
In the bag is a Buffalo windshirt which is wind and shower proof and a buff.I was already wearing a Hellyhansen top and a fleece, fleece trousers and a hat. Also in the pic is a survival blanket.I feel with this combo and a fire I could comfortably survive a night.:D
2 Dogs that is a good point and I often do add a small stainless bowl which I am thinking of swapping for a small stainless mug with 2 holes drilled near the top so I can suspend it with wire over a fire!

Well spotted !!!
Actually that wouldn't be a bad thing thing to have after one of my chilli's...LOL !!!!!!!!!

Not being argumentative, but is the sharpener redundant in a small kit if you have a knife. The knife can make tinder as well and eliminate the need for the sharpener. It's a good idea, but the item seems to purpose specific and not a generalist item like a knife. Your thoughts please.

A pencil sharpener is very small and is safer to use when your hands are very cold & wet, and not functioning at their best. Note that pit man is on Vancouver Island. The temps often don't change much from day into night. It's far from the desert.

ERdept,Yeah I kinda agree what you are saying but I find it makes lots of fine tinder very quickly and as it fits in my fire kit and weighs next to nothing if nothing else it's a back up !!!

I also carry a GPS. That way I can either find my way out or tell rescuers almost exactly where I am (if my cell phone or radio works).

The cup is a very good idea, and a mini Bic ligher takes only a little more room than your pencil sharpener (which is a good idea).

Food bars or an MRE would be great. You won't die of hunger in a day or so, but why suffer.

Could you provide more info about the blue plastic box your fire kit is in; size, who makes them, etc? I'm looking for something to carry a few first aid supplies that I can have with me all the time; couple of alcohol wipes, couple of bandaids, small tube of Neosporine, and some Tylenol.
