Now granted she will no doubt grow some in the next six to eight months or so (I do want to get the Recluse first)...and yes I want her to grow into it some. However she has really small hands lol, and I'll get her another knife in a few years once she is better at controlling one.

Could you adjust the diameter and length of the handle of the Hiking Buddy a little? Maybe enough to offset her small hand size some if I pay for it in advance of you starting on it?

And yes...we both get our hands pretty dirty when we are out :)

Probably pretty close as is. Thinner scales of course. I can ajust of course. I'm making a few of the old Bushie Jrs soon too. She may like those also.

Cool, I'll have to check out the Bushy Jrs. when you do them...I don't remember the size on them. She is currently "training" with my smallest paring knife (which I haven't sharpened lately) learning blade control doing things like cutting dumplings. I really like the Hiking Buddy design a lot...I just think she needs a proportionately scaled down version or something similar until she builds her wrist/hand strength and dexterity more. I want her to continue to see it more as having fun than doing "work".

Well, the HB is going to be better for her size now, but that Bushie Jr isn't far off.

That's cool, I love the Hiking Buddy design a lot, I especially like the looks of the one in this picture and keep thinking how with one with tan micarta scales we would look like a "team" but then wonder if I should do that or if I should go with a different color micarta to promote her individuality. I am going to wince any time she drops it anyway...I don't want my heart stopping like it would with her dropping a beautiful number like this. The more I see this one the more I drool over it. I wonder if with her first one that maybe you not having gone through the trouble of mating bolsters might be better and just do full micarta....but I really love this look.

She won't need a penetrator tip...but what is the blade thickness on this scandi model?

That is a 3/32" thick blade.

That's what I was thinking it would be...like that Bushcraft Karda you made for your nephew. I am thinking that might be the best way to go for hers...3/32 thick scandi...less work on me sharpening too.

This is the paring knife I am teaching her knife use with...starting with easy things.

As you can see it is close to the same length as the Bushfinger but made of 3/32 steel and the handle is a good bit smaller in "diameter" and it fills her hand. I think an adjusted Hiking Buddy in 3/32 with a scandi (unless a high saber is possible with 1/8"?) should be perfect for her to grow into. I don't think going from a flat grind to the scandi will throw her off much...maybe a little bit at first...but not for long and it will be a stronger blade as she grows into it than a 3/32 flat ground paring knife.

Very cool pics of the kiddo Mist.

Thanks bro. Before she did those little ones I sliced some much larger ones into long pieces and then let her dice them. When it came to those I cut one in half to show her what I wanted and she did the rest. Lisa always lets her help when she makes cakes and brownies and stuff (lol, she's the dessert chef here) and so Alayna always wants to help me too now. I figured I might as well teach her how to really help me, and a lot of what I cook involves a knife. Besides she is often watching me when I test knives, by getting her involved with them I avoid the "mystique" and hopefully the "sneaking around" with them. I plan on doing a lesson of some sort with her at least every other day....for now on soft things like mushrooms (we all love them here), dumplings, and celery and stuff, then I'll move up to potatoes, onions and carrots and such.
