Good livin in the worlds most expensive country :P

Yeah Norway is known for being expensive in the rest of Scandinavia. Is it true that you can buy half a cucumber in the supermarket? :)

Sure everything is more expensive; cars, rent, cigarettes, gasoline, knives, groceries, etc, etc, but lets not forget that the minimum wage in Norway is substantially higher than in the US, so in the end the difference isnt that big, if any.

Yeah the wage is higher, but for a poor student like me the prices are way too high!

What is a typical wage for a normal worker in the US?

I live in Denmark myself, but wikipedia says about 7-8 USD per hour in the US. Maybe some americans can chime in and confirm this.

In contrast the minimum wage in Denmark is about ca. 105 DKK per hour which equals 20 USD. Thats where it begins. And i know for a fact that Norwegian wages are higher than Denmark, but i cant say precisely by how much.

I've seen some weird stuff happen with knife pricing...I was on a Russian knife site once for some reason i can't remember.

I noticed an ESEE HEST and a Meyerco Necklance...the weird thing was that the myerco was almost half the price of the HEST and here in the USA one is $95 the other is $5

I believe Washington has the highest minimum wage at $8.67 an hour. What are your taxes like? I usually take home 80 - 85% after the tax on my pay check

In Denmark it depends on how much you make. Thos with low incomes pay roughly 40% while those with the highest incomes can reach 62%.

IIRC Swedes abit pay abit less while Norwegians pay a little more.

I am curious what Helle knives (made in your Country) go for there compared to over here. I can't imagine that you would pay more for them there than in North America.

Prices are always too high for poor students, even in the US.

I'd be curious to find out why prices are so high there. Import taxes? Niche market? Simple supply and demand?

Interestingly, Scandinavian countries are typically thought to be economic powerhouses in a way that mystifies Americans, with high taxes, strong welfare state, strong labor unions, low inequality, and such yet with high indexes of economic freedom and prosperity. Fascinating how different cultures and economic/political philosophies can produce similarly good results.

I feel your pain, but in a different way. Here in the USA, toys imported from Japan are insanely marked up, probably because they are only available in small specialty shops, so kinda like knives....

It would have been nice to have your minimum wage when I was a high school student working retail! $20 an hour would have made me feel like a CEO!

Different regions pay differ. I was reading an article just last night stating that the "average" starting wage for Police Officers is 34,000-46,000 a year. Where I live, I make 26,600. A fair bit lower than the low end average. Roughly 12.79 hour.

Compared to here, 20.66 an hour is fairly good.

The knives in Norway are expensive because the dealers import them at MSRP.

And the helle knives are more expensive in Norway then in US.

Example HELLE EGGEN in norway 90$ and in US 68$

Woah, and here I thought ordering knives within Canada was bad for that...I realized the kroner didn't go a long way these days, but I didn't realize it was that bad.

I expect to pay around 30% more for a knife when ordering within Canada than I do when ordering from the states, not counting the taxes.

Norway is indeed expensive - I was once on holiday there (lovely!) and I can only confirm that. Now for the locals, they are born into possibly the most extensive welfare state on earth, and high taxes on everything are required to keep that going. A very different approach than the USA, for sure !

Back to knives, yes I also import most of my american brand knives from the USA. In the end they cost me between one third and half of the price here. There is a risk that customs add some extra cost, but I have often been lucky.
