hey folks.. thought i would share some pics of my new Stromeng Leuku that arrived yesterday, i snapped a few before it got dark.. This thing is awesome..

The Leuku has a rich history as being a tried and true wilderness knife.. It is used for just about everything from shelter building to butchering meat.. The design is very user oriented and hasn't changed much at all in hundreds of years.
I have wanted a Leuku for a long time, and after getting my Roselli puukko recently, I wanted to get one even more to pair up with it..

i decided to go with the 8 in. Stromeng Leuku. So far i am glad i did, I love it.

here's some specs..

- 8 in. carbon steel blade.
- 1 9/16 at its widest point.
- .110" thick.
- 4 5/8" long Birch handle.
- brass fittings.

here it is paired up with my Roselli..

The Stromeng came with a pretty nice sheath too..

I really like the shape of the handle.. it is comfortable in multiple grips.. The Birch wood has a nice warm feel too..

some in hand shots..(please disregard my burned forearm, i work in a kitchen.)

full grip..

and the chopping grip, which is done by gripping the handle at the lower end of it and putting the wide portion in the center of your hand..

the brass pommel..

so far, i am loving this knife..the edge came nice and sharp.. it is very light weight, yet feels like it is capable of handling some heavy work..
it'll be accompanying me camping this upcoming weekend, at another big 3-d traditional archery shoot.

thanks for looking..

Mike

Woah!

That thing stands as a beast of blades! Eagerly awaiting some action shots with that massive cleaver! I bet it'll tackle a variety of hard work tasks.

Awesome, thanks for posting. I've been thinking about purchasing a leuku to pair with my many puukkos. This looks great.

I used to have one. Built a great winter shelter with it a few years ago. Chops well and didn't flip out of my hand even using mittens. Great knife!

I really like the simplistic look of the handle on that. Great looking blade.

I bought a helle lapplander 3 years ago and really like it too. Blade is 8 5/8 and sandvik. Great all around bushknife. Started taking it hiking strapped to the pack or inside last year, where I know it will be overgrown with blackberry/salal etc or there is an option for fire. Not a heavy chopper but light and whippy enough for the light stuff without fatigue but can still chop ok.

I could be happy backpacking for a week with it and a fiskars saw as long as it was not early spring/late fall or winter. Then the amount of battoning would get ridiculous in our wet wood......time for the wetterlings.

Was using it last year on my salmon for knocking heads/tails and cutting salmon steaks to save the edge on my fillet knife.

Did your leuku come with a varied edge angle? My lapplander has a thinner slicing edge at the handle and progressively gets thicker towards the tip for chopping strength.
The sheath design is just about the best I have seen for ease of carry and safety, may not be lighting fast out of the sheath

If I would have known about the stromeng in carbon steel before buying the lapplander I would have gone for it but I don't have anything bad to say about my lapplander. Starting to like the ease of maintenance with sandvik on it and one of my mora's, holds an edge pretty well too. This coming from a carbon junkie.

I love leuko's, but only own the full length Koyote Leuko, but would love to own more. That one looks great, and I really like how thin the blade stock is- personally I rarely see the need for more than 1/8". I am awaiting the return of a blade from heat treat to finish one myself, I hope it looks as good as the one you posted, although it will look different.

Congrats.

Ok I have been looking at these knives for a number of years and now to hear how well you men like these I am going to have to get me one!

My Norwegian uncle has carried that same knife size and style on hikes with his dogs for years.
I think it's probably 40 yrs old, I know he bought it on a trip to Trondheim.
I think his small knife is the plain red Mora with the plastic sheath...
Thermos of coffee, water bottle, some course bread and a hunk of cheese and he's gone for the day.

right on guys.. thanks for the kind words.. i am definitely loving this knife.. i got to use a bit this past weekend at a big traditional 3-d shoot/campout we went to...

That is one awesome looking blade Mike.

I haven't bought a new blade in a long time. I think I might have to get one of these.

I noticed that in addition to the 8"er, Ragnar had them in 7" and 9".

What made you choose the 8" over the other two?

thanks BB.. i am loving it..i think you will too.. :)

as far choosing the 8 in. version, i knew i wanted something bigger than a 7 in. blade and i just felt like i would be able to maneuver/use the 8 in. a little more efficiantly than the 9 incher.

Ragnar was really cool to deal with, i ordered my Roselli carpenter and ordered this one the following week.

cheers.. Mike
