This laser thing with burning the carbon off the very edge of the knives. It sounds like my knife might get tougher the more I use it.

Foster,
That may be true up to a certain point. Once you sharpen past the area lacking the normal amount of carbon in INFI, the knife should stay at a fairly constant performance level. Jerry and Andy would be better qualified to talk to about this.

Folks, you have no idea how long I have been trying to post to this forum. Tonight it worked. You see just one of the letters in my password is capitalized and I didn't see it. oh you have no idea how long I have been out there with my nose pushed against the glass, watching and wishing I could shoot the Busse bull with you fine folks. I was there with you when Andy was in the barny suit singing, I was singing with you. You thought it was the wind outside but NO it was me! I was with you guys when the lean meanstreet was unvieled. I was with you when you were giving input on the bolo project. My battle mistress was unsheathed and ready as andy battled the bear!!! I know your names Ryu,Hoodoo, cliff, muzzleup and Tall Paul. Every day I would run to my computer to see what the discussion of the day would be. But I could not post.
I would get on rec.knives and post about my battle mistress and my adventures chopping rope and trees slicing a v8 tomatoe juice can in half but the interest from the other patrons was not there. They don't understand building your busse a little house on your coffee table complete with a little bed with tuff cloth sheets and a pool with a little diving board filled with mineral oil.
I was there when the blade-o-leer was in development! man that thing is groovy.
well any way guys I could go on and on I sure am glad I can post now.

Hey, welcome, foster! Now that you've discovered those passwords are case sensitive (and may include numerals), you can get longwinded here

Right now I'm wondering if I can get a DMT sharping "stone" and a Gerber Strike Force, and maybe even a little trioxane fuel -- ALL into the pouch on the front of my sheath. That way, if I have to sprint naked from a police station, grabbing only my Busse, then run into the woods and hide in an old mine, I'll have my survival kit ready...

Hey, it was a pretty good movie. Not great, but entertaining.

Well, this armchair Rambo is outa here.

Welcome to the Forum Foster.

Lane, It wouldn't take much to sew and/or attach a flat pouch on the back of the sheath to store a pair of shorts for that naked sprint. Slip in an extra handcuff key, which I always found useful. I have my E-Steel Heart II tucked safely in my recliner. It makes a great companion to my remote.

I dinged the edge of my Natural Outlaw on some deer bones. Of course, both the knife and bones had been out in the freezing cold over a couple of hours. I was able to get the edge back easily.

Enjoy the forum Foster & welcome.

Melvin

Foster,
Welcome to the forums!

I've been through this edge problem with my MS. It was not holding the edge I expected so Andy sent it back, actually hand delivered it

, to Jerry. BTW, I made sure this was not a wire edge problem before I sent it. Jerry said the culprit might be that the edge still contained steel effected by the laser cutting process. It's usually removed when the blade is shaped.

This is what happens to the steel: A laser is HOT and boy do I mean HOT! Some of the more volitile bits like nitrogen and carbon get vaporized when the laser goes by and what you have left is a mixture of metals only. No carbides, no nitrides. We all know just how important these are to steel! Jerry spends alot of money trying to get nitrogen INTO his steel properly! This process is very close to a vaporization analysis on the steel.

I removed some of the material at the edge, I think Jerry may have also, and have had no problems since.

Hope this helps,
Rich

I heard something about this when I got my D2 Fighting Knife and D2 folder from Ka Bar. I was warned that as it was cut using a laser (Barstock removal) that the edge may be weaker than expected for the first ten resharpenings. Now I don`t know if this is true...

This is not a good thing?
I guess it makes mass production more cost effective and more speedy.

Good idea, MTF3. There's room for a bit more pouch on that sheath.

I wonder if the laser cutting of blade blanks is becoming more common. I know there are several novel methods to cut steel these days, even super high pressure water jets; I just wondered which are becoming cost-effective to manufacturers.

I'll watch closely to see if the edge characteristics seem to change on my SHII.

Andy, I have to agree with you locking Frank's thread, but I did notice that's the only thread lately that has shown the little "busy" flame. Things must be slow.

What else can we stir up? Best knife for driving through body metal and/or windshield glass (in case you have to do an impromptu rescue and left your Jaws of Life at home)?

Oh absentmindedness! Sara served me a nicely marinated elk steak (with baked potato, salad, and whipped cream-topped pumpkin pie for dessert, of course) for lunch today, and I forgot to try my Busse on that!

Best knife for cutting radiator and heater hose? Plastic pipe?

Will Busse ever fool with serrated knives?

Should the Busse Folder, when it finally appears, have a pocket clip, or should we just install a surplus lifeboat davit on the side of our pants, to hoist it aboard?

There has to be SOMETHING that will stir discussion here. Have a good weekend, friends.

I like the serrated knife idea!!! Imagine.. oh lets say a fully serrated Basic #9 or even partially serrated. Maybe I can come up with a computer generated pic. Anybody interested?

Thanks guys!! Glad I'm able to get on now.

I think I remember In a thread Andy posted that Busse was working on Their own seration
pattern that was going to look horribly aggresive. It may have been for the bolo project.

I have entertained the idea of having Busse add a small section of serations to my lovely battle mistress in light of the laser debate this would grind right past that fried infi and get right to the groovy stuff!!!

however I would want to see the Busse pattern and also leave most of the blade the way it is cause I love to chop chop chop...

WTF - 1sks was offering partially serrated Basics (they did the serrations in-house). Not sure if they still do it or not though...

woke up this morning to hear my pit bull 'cody' chewing on what I thought was a raw hide bone. It was my Busse. he was chewing on the handles. some time during the night he snuck up and got it off the nightstand.
I got very upset, but it was for nothing.
his teeth were fine
