This Look Odd to Anyone?

Okay, this isn't to knock on Kershaw/ZT Knives as I'm simply curious as to what's going on, but has anyone else noticed how similar the jimping is on the ZT 0454 to the jimping that Jason Brous uses on his blades (particularly the Silent Soldier fixed blade)? For that matter, I wonder if he's noticed this himself. Does anyone know if there's a story behind this and/or if jimping patterns can be copy righted?

I would assume they could be copyrighted in the sense of "machine marks on a specific aspect of the knife" - similar to the way a makers mark is copyrighted.

However, the RIL was patented - which is really just different tooling, in a sense. Thus, if Brous really put up a case that this is his particular jimping and it is ecspecially effective what on and what have you, then yes, a series tooled/machine (gimping) could be copyrighted

That's what I was thinking. It's very, very close to his pattern. I noticed it right off looking over some images of the ZT 0454 proto type.

I'm not seeing it. The machining on the 454 looks nice and professional. The machining on the Brous just looks like someone cut some slots with a dremel tool.

The jimping blocks on the Brous is just cubes while the jimping on the 454 are like flat topped pyramids.

Right... you noticed it because you saw Jason trying to stir the pot on facebook... You even used the same picture he posted.

Who really cares? It's not a duplicate pattern knife, just a small segment of jimping that looks "similar".

Wouldnt benchmade have used a similar pattern before either of them with the purple "serrated" backspacer on the 940. I can definately see the similarity in the idea but not the execution. All 3 have the same serrated pattern, but when machined, have equally different outcomes. Not arguing either side because i think both blades are pretty killer.

And JSM, I lived in boone for 8 years and not once, ran into another knife nut. Alaway wanted someone to share and compare new blades with while i lived there. I moved about 2 years ago, are there any local shops that have started stocking higher end knives around those parts lately?

I'm not seeing it...and if Jason is calling out anyone on design stealing...that's the pot calling the kettle black.

How do you know that Mr. Brous did not copy Kershaw?

I don't, which is why I'm interested in knowing what's going on here.

The Mast Store out in Valle Crucis is carrying Benchmades and Spydercos now (mostly the Griptilian and Delica/Endura lines) and the prices are surprisingly competitive when you figure shipping from well known online sources. I'm hoping they'll expand and get some more models/brands in stock.

Probably same picture because I follow KAI's Facebook page (along with several other pages belonging to various manufactures). On that note, the pictures of the ZT 0801 are beautiful.

Bingo.

I'm not seeing it...and if Jason is calling out anyone on design stealing...that's the pot calling the kettle black.

Bingo again. The guy steals designs and then does the cutsie little "hmmmm...." crap about some jimping on a knife that's orders of magnitude ahead of anything he's ever built.

Scurvy's pretty much hit it on the nose, he's the Vanilla Ice of the knife world.

The knife world is all about using others' ideas. For the most part, everyone seems cool about it...jimping isn't complicated enough for someone to get butthurt over IMHO lol

I don't see the similarity other that a real basic pattern. The overall look is really different.

Maybe he wrote 'hmmmm' as in: 'Hmmmmm, I may need to add this feature to my next knife...'

I guess I don't get it. Jason is accusing Kai USA of copying the texturing pattern on the 0454 backspacer?

My thoughts exactly. By the way, no one has ever duplicated a Bob Loveless drop point hunter.....
