 I've been around awhile now(on the forums) and have been growing more fond of Spydercos each day. My first was a UK Pen then a Lum Chinise PE, a Dragonfly FRN PE, then a Delica FRN PE and most resently, a Calypso Jr grey FRN PE.

Every knife so far has been, for the most part, perfect. Until the Caly. Just got it today and the first thing i noticed was the blade was all the way off centered.*not a big deal to me, but I would perfer it to be centered* Here's where it gets good.

When I got home, I looked at the knife and determined it was the FRN that was warped. Being the "hands on, do it yourselfer" I took it into my own hands to "fix" the problem. I got my Wagoner heat gun and heated the handle(being carefull not to melt it) and as it got warmer, the blade centered it-self! I can't believe it was that easy! While I was at it, I drilled and tapped it for low-ride, tip-up carry. ****I really like this knife and it will be my EDC for quite awhile.

*just wondering if anyone else has heated a FRN handle to center a blade..

I ripped the clip out of my Pacific Salt when it snagged on my car seat one day. I used a small gas torch to melt it back into place - it's rock solid now althoug the FRN around the clip looks a little bubbled - I wonder if I voided the warranty?

...I have had 3 calypso jr knives in frn and all of the blades were off center when it was folded up...

...That includes older black ones in se and pe, and a newer gray one too...

I have a black PE Caly Jr. and it's off center. It's not really a problem for me.

The blade on the black one I had would center when I would remove the clip. My conclusion was that the clip screws were too close to the pivot and it was pulling it over.

Thanks for the replies. Forgot to mention, I removed the clip before I did anything. Carried it all day, today, and it's still centered and smooth as ever. Gotta love them Spydercos!

I do like Spyderco's but I have to tell you it's things like these that make me want to look more at Benchmade. One of the two Calypso Jr. Grey FRN's that I bought is off center and almost touching the one edge. I can open the knife and as it opens the tip rubs the edge of the FRN. Kinda stinks actually. After hearing about quite a few of these Caly Jr's being like this I have to wonder what's up?

I'm staring to go back to my original feeling of FRN being "cheap".

I think from now on I'm going to have to stick with $70 and up knives. I do love the Calypso Jr, but I gotta say it would be a much sturdier knife in G10 or stainless. Problem is with stainless it's too slick of your palm is sweaty.

In fact, due to this off center "cheap" thing, I think my Calypso Jr has just become my first "beater" :)

Oh well... just some of my thoughts :) Thanks for readin'.

Who cares if a blade rubs a little FRN. It won't get scratched. By definition a Calypso is a beater. It's certainly not a gentleman's blade. At $40, it's certainly not expensive.

wwells20, did you heat the entire handle or only one side (meaning, if the blade leaned to the clip side, did you heat the clip side, or vise versa)? I have two i'd like to "true-up" but don't want to make it worse. thx, ft

fishtale, 1-removed the clip to eliminate it from being a factor in misalignment.
2-heated both sides, with blade open, until fairly hot to the touch.
3-with a rag (could have used a glove but that would have been
smart) I griped the knife and "worked" the blade. I'd say 3 or 4
times.
4-checked the blade and it was inline.
5- knife has been carried 2 days and opened over 100 times (guess)
and is still ok.
6- cooled the knife with compressed air (i don't think this changed
anything)

*******PLEASE TAKE CARE WITH THE HEATGUN********
I don't want anyone to melt or ruin a knife because of me! God knows I've ruined enough knives for everyone!!
