Ok gals and guys, I'm sure many of you have seen the Knife Art Exclusive SR-1's with Chad Nichols Lizard Damascus. When I saw it I fell in love and got it. Unfortunately and fortunately in the end I wore through some of the acid etch and polished some of the blade inadvertently with my fugazzi home made WEPS platons when trying to mirror the edge. I thought about re-etching the blade but since I've never etched I opted against it. Instead I buffed off all the etching and made myself a hand polished Damascus blade. It's not a daily EDC so I'm not worried about rusting and since I keep the blade oiled I don't worry much about that either. For a mistake I think it came out nicely...

Yup .... it's stainless, so no worries. Interesting looking and, if you change your mind .... you can still go ahead and have it re-etched! Did you remove the blade or just buff/polish it in the frame?

That's kinda cool!

Oh, and if somebody flames you for performing a modification to your own property, they should be beaten with a rubber chicken.

Dennis, I did it in stages but I took the blade out. Well I wrestled it out and really wrestled it back in. This knife does not like being taken apart I don't think.

After I messed up the etching I tried my best to at least polish it out as best I could. So I removed the blade then started with a 2000grit sandpaper and worked my way up to 3000, then polishing creme and then a 2 sided jewlers rag to finish it off.

I say stages because my first attempt, I didn't polish any of the waster surfaces. But my knife was really really tight. It almost hurt to open. This is before everything, while new. So I sanded the tang sides two where the washers lie but that I did on a mirror to keep it flat. It's still hard to open and close but much easier and smooth. Lockup is perfect, no movement and it's really good to go. I actually like it better, I think it's unique.

And thanks T1mpani, I appreciate it. I'm new here but been on forums before so I know some may get upset on tampering with a more expensive knife or a more rare blade but I'm with you and feel it's mine. It's just that I'm aware that purists exist and I respect their opinion too.

I understand---my rubber chicken never intends to disrespect anyone's opinion, but rather to educate them. :D

I like it! Kind of a ghost Damascus pattern! Great job brotha! And as far as rusting, polishing it should actually reduce any possibility of rusting. It's stainless so It should be pretty good, but if it were going to rust it would happen on the etched portions, so polishing that would even get rid of that possibility.

Thank you man, and thats exactly my take on the rusting too. Now that I've sanded the blade once I have no problem doing it again. It actually helped mine though, I didn't hear you mention it but mine was ridiculously hard to open. Now it feels like a heavy sebenza.

Nice recovery! Re the rubber chicken: I think I had it for lunch yesterday!

Stainz

PS I have some leftover printed circuit board etchant (FeCl & HCl) - won't that delineate the Damascus? I don't have anything I would try it on... yet!

I think thats the etchant I would need to use to make it look two toned again. Its a hard blade to photograph with a phone but essentially the lines are mirrored while the spaces are more satin.
