Well, I got my "repaired" motor back from grizzly today. It still makes the same noise as before and is a little bit worse, too. And they said it was repaired. I cant wait to give them a call and chew them out.

Oh Taz, I think you just like to bitch! Give it a chance. Sometimes, you can expect a break-in period on new equipment. If your warranty is more than 5 mins, give it a chance. Maybe it's supposed to make that noise. He he he.

Hey, if it's cheap junk, get rid of the whole thing. Send it back and get a refund. Quit yer bellyachin and get to grindin ya bastid!

I hate to be the first to say this Taz, no actually I'm thrilled to be the first to say this to you Taz, neener neener neener, told ya !!!!!!!!!!!!!

max, it was let run 30 min when I got it. Then another 30 to 45 minutes while 2 different machinists listen to it. It got well over an hour of break in time. then after i got it back from the "repair", it was the same. It was running for about 10 or 15 more minutes and was still making the same noise. I could hear it when i was talking on the phone to my parents, thats how loud the noise was!

I hate having to bitch about the stuff, but i am a little ticked off. The motor was supposed to be repaired and the problem was not fixed. I have to wait another 2 weeks, which means I won't be able to grind over thanksgiving break, so that means I will be about 2 to 3 months behind on my grinding.

Believe me, I want to grind, but it's a little difficult when the motor isn't running properly and making some damn funny noises at random.

If i send it back, I have to use the 1x30 I have that totally sucks. Hand filing is better than the 1x30!

Unless you want to donate about $600 so I can get a Wilton!

mine makes a funny noise too like it's about to crap the bed .
but after 600hrs or so, still runs and still makes the the noise.
what does it sound like.
Mine is a loud grating whine.

when you buy something that is made by people who make $1 per day you shouldnt expect too much....but if you arent happy... I say.....send it back!! I paid $450 for my new 2hp baldor motor for my bader.....the old one crapped out after I leaned on it HARD for over 16 years.

Tom, I already sent the motor back for repair once. When i first got the grinder, my parents plugged it in and heard the noise, so they let it run for a while, then took it to a machinist to listen to when the noise didn't go away. We sent it back and 2 weeks later, we got it back. There wasn't anything saying if it was repaired or not. I was told it was repaired, but it still makes the noise. It's hard to explain the noise.

Oh yeah, thank you for your advice with the steel! That project is on hold until I get the grinder straightened out. I am thinking of using D2 for the kitchen knife and using the extra for a few hunters, etc. Cheaper than the san mai.

I got one of those Grizzleys Haven't had any problems with mine Knock on wood.
Call Grezzley and holler and scream. Then use it over the long weekend and send it back afterwards. You would be giving them the benefit of the doubt by trying it out. Just don't go over your warranty period.
Take Care

:
TJ, that sounds like a plan and what I would do as well.
Use it and then send it back and Scream and Holler till they get it right!!

I have to "knock wood" as well since I have had good luck with my Grizz Grinder.
The Buffer I bought is a bit light on horses,1/2, and I can drag it down by leaning on it.
It was "set up" to tight and you have to spin the wheels to get it moving before putting the power to it, but hey, what can I expect for the amount of money I spent. And it is "wearing in."

I won't "take up" for them, but I have been to the showroom in Springfield and believe me It is One Busy Place!!!
I had to wait on my grinder and then wait again until a missing part could be sent, but I am very happy with its performance, but I am a hobbiest and not depending on it for a living.

Give 'em hail Taz!!!

Get real close and listen to the sound your PC makes. Hear it? Now listen real close...
Ready?

Thats louder than the Baldor motor on my Hard Core!!!!!!

Yeah we aren't much help, are we?

Taz, use that thing 'til the wheels fall off. Holler and scream (my advice, don't ever cuss) until they send you a different motor!

Tom, that's about what I make when I make knives, what's the rub??? I am happy to just break even!

As taken from your topic in the General Forums area:

Taz,
Sorry to hear about your Grizzly problems!! It's too bad to think of things this way but.... When I order something from Grizzly, Harbor Freight, etc. I consider the darn thing a "KIT" at best. I will be delivered a bunch of cheap parts that are put together but usually not properly assembled. What happens is, as with my metal band saw, I take it appart before I even plug the darn thing in!! I replace the chinese bearings with quality ones, blow the dust, bugs and rat $hi+ out of the motor, add grease fittings,Gates V belt, Heli Coils, change bushings to bearings in some cases, add a name brand grease, lubricate other parts, THEN I reassemble it using loctite and American made bolts and screws!!
This probably triples the price of the original machine in parts, machining, and time. If I had just started using the saw, as is, on my tough materials, it would have self destructed in NO time The results, again with my bandsaw, is now a ROCK SOLID machine that I built from a "Kit'!! And..... I'm ahead of the game as far as cost over a Starret or DoAll band saw by a mile!!
The deeper you get into knifemaking the more you will have to be your own machine builder/designer/machanic/fabricator/technician! Tear the damn thing down and see what makes it "TICK"!!!
I know of two people that bought a small surface grinder from Harbor freight, one worked great the other had to be returned twice with MAJOR problems!! So far my Grizzly buffers are working good as well as the Table saw I bought several years ago and have since sold to a neibor. My small Grizzly drill press is also going strong with only minor upgrades!!

just got off the phone with them. According to them, there was no bearing noise, it might be the washers on the shaft, so we r taking the washers off and trying them again, but if the washers are tight, they shouldn't make noise, right??? They said i could send it back for a second repair/look at. I asked if i could get a new motor shipped to me(which is what I paid for, a new motor) and they didnt like that idea, so they will have a tech guy call my parents on monday and talk to them about it.
Neil, if i knew how to repair the stuff and had to time and money to do it, i would. if i had another motor to use, I would but all i have is 1/4 hp motors. Plus i was going to mount a disc on the other shaft and use that for flat grinding.

I bought a Grizzly to start of with as well. It took two times back to get the contact wheel square. They understood and eventually took care of the problem. The equipment is not the best for what we do, but they keep trying their best with the service.

I agree with the earlier plan. Give it a good try over the long weekend and if it persists, send it back and ask for a "new" motor, not a repair.

The motor on mine also had the centrifugal contact ring inside mis adjusted. I had to pull start it... pull the belt to gain momentum, then start the motor. After I went inside to clean the windings (couldn't think of anything else wrong) I found the contactor was not adjusted. It never contacted for start up. After a small adjustment, I never had to pull start the thing again.

However, now it's only a buffing motor. I replaced the starter kit with a beautiful new Bader III. WOW! Can't believe I could actually make grind lines with the Grizzly after using the Bader.

Anyway, be persistent. It's a great starter kit.
