This might interest you guys...a pictorial of me making a blade blank

I like the picture of you grinding in Part II. You have arms like a little girl(from the Russian Olympic Weightlifting team) :D

Really informative, and educational, Is that a spindle sander or a router? Some info please.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Hey Steven-

Funny you mentioned that, I tried out for the Russian Women's Weightlifting Team... they said I didn't have enough testosterone or facial hair! :o

It's a Delta B.O.S.S spindle sander. I bought it before I had the small wheel attachment for my Burr King. I used it a lot for doing "S" bolster fit ups.

The forging one is the coolest... I've seen the pics put together from Randy...

Thanks Steve :)

Great job Nick,I really enjoy having a chance to see the maker at work. From a collectors stand point it really can open the eyes to how much goes into putting a knife together.

First rate article.
Nick Wheeler however, is spending way too much time at the gym, instead of making knives! :footinmou

Very cool. I had to keep that one pic away from my fiance. :D

Man that made me laugh! :D

Cool articles Nick, thanks for posting.

Nice pics!
Making knives looks so simple. I decided on making my own doggone custom knives. And it's a lot cheaper!
I just completed my first three.

Eat your heart out Mr. Wheeler! :D

EDITED TO ADD:
Awesome article!!!

What an excellent pair of articles with such clear pictures. Thank you for posting that.

Nick,

Cool pictorial!! To think you could make a blade without hitting it with a hammer!!! :D

This may be too much shop talk, but did you build your salt bath rig? If so, could you give me a run down of the parts involved, where you accquired them and rough cost estimate? I have a forge set up for a salt bath, but don't have the plumbing for the gas or the controls. You can e-mail me if you don't wish to post the info here.

Thanks,

Cool tutorial Nick and cool knife. I'm with Bailey, I had no idea you could make a knife without using a hammer ;).

Matt

There is a tremendous appreciation of the work and costs involved in custom made knives, in addition to the equipment and consumables, the space you need to do it in. This is a great peek into the life of makers who you only normally see all dressed up in front of their tables at shows.

Thanks everybody! :D

I'm trying to get my darn shop time straightened up... and I'll be doing a camp and hunter set for our friends here RogerP and StephenF. I plan on doing just as complete of photo ride of that project... and that should be fun. They will be much more elaborate blades with damascus fittings and fancy wood handles.

Bailey, I'd be more than happy to help if I can! I'll mail you :)

Oh, Bailey and Matt... I know... who would'a thought you could make a knife without baning on it with a hammer??? LOL! :D

I definitely prefer standing at the anvil with a hammer in hand than sitting at the band-saw... ;)

Thanks, Nick, My friend----I thoroughly have enjoyed your transition from a novice to the Master. It is only what I had predicted a few years ago. Your love of what you do is highly visible. ---Sandy---

Nick,
You have anything for me???????????????????????????????????????????????
Randy

Yeah, he's got Girlyman arms for ya! :D

Seriously, great job on the tutorial, Nick. I couldn't get arms like that, if I took steroids and lifted 5 days a week for 10 years. :)
