...ugh.

it's been a LONG time since I've been on this board, for I have a new job and not enough extra money to kick towards my very modest collection.

I must vent, however, for in the last month I lost the only 4 knives I had... my Cricket, my Civilian, my Zowada, and my Native.

Damn this sucks...

So now I must pick up a new one, and must decide which way to go. Lucky for me (if the board is like it was before), all I have to do is wait around another 10 minutes before another "best all-purpose knife?" thread kicks in.

I'm leaning towards a Centofante... I now work in a blue/white collar job, and the "gentleman's folder" look might not draw unwanted attention (that's where the Zowada might have been handy...it's not too evil looking).

I might just go the tactical folder route because someone offered me a good deal on a Keating MOD...don't want to break the Spydie allegience though.

Oh well, after Christmas I should get the funds up.

Hi,

Sorry to hear about the 4 knives you lost this month -

If you cannot afford to be seen with a scary looking blade around work - go for the Spyderco Howard Viele in plain edge - it's classy looking and IMHO the most beautiful Spyderco ever produced.

rhino, I suggest, depending upon the legal blade limits where you are, that you try the Spyderco/Centofante Vesuvius with the grip insert. I have one with a blue insert and it looks very classy, is very inexpensive, has a compression lock, and a spear-point 3 1/8" blade of ATS-34. A great buy in a knife!

A somewhat larger, more expensive choice might be a Spyderco/Terzuola StarMate, with its 3 3/4" blade of CPM440V. This is my all-time favorite folding knife, and I have seen it for as little as $94. It has been discontinued, so you had best hurry if you want one.

The Zytel Native, at about $45 with a 3 1/8" blade is a steal, IMNSHO, and looks pretty innocuous. Take it from one who has carried Blue BF Native for 2 years at work in a federal office in Washington, DC, where the blade limit is 3". My Native has a blade that measures just under 3 1/32", so close to the limit that no officer has ever bothered with it. Interestingly enough, my Delica 98, with a blade supposedly 2 7/8" long, measures just under 3 1/32" as well.

A very exciting little office- and hoplophobe-pleasing knife is the Meerkat. It has a 2" blade of 440C and one of the trickest locks ever. The clip is a very heavy guage of wire and is mounted at the top of the hilt, so that it is all but invisible in your pocket. I got mine just after 9/11 because everyone was so nervous and I did not wish to aggravate the situation. It worked wonderfully well.

Finally, you have the Calypso Jr. and the Navigator. I do not have personal experience of either knife, but I have read good things about both from others here on these forums.

Lost four knives? Yowsa! Were they stolen?

If you're looking for inconspicuous knives, there are three I recommend simply because they ride so low in the pocket: Standard and Calypso Jr. (in either micarta or zytel scales). All three are similar in size and shape, but there are trade-offs with all three:

Standard: A little hard to find but they pop up on eBay all the time. This was my first Spyderco and is still my favorite Spyderco for EDC. G-10 handles can't be beat, and ATS-55 is pretty good steel.

Calypso Jr. in micarta: Also discontinued and harder to find, but I still see them on eBay and on the For Sale boards here. Micarta is nice stuff, but the AUS-8 blades are only ok.

Calypso Jr. in zytel: Well, it's zytel, but it sure is a lightweight package as advertised. The best part of this knife is the steel. VG-10 is one of my favorites because it gets hair splitting sharp and holds that edge.

Do not want to sound like a broken record, but how did you lose 4 knives ? were they stolen ?

Perhaps he feels badly and does not want to talk abvout it. I wouldn't were I in his shoes.

sorry about the delay answering your questions.

Native: left somewhere at the garage I work at part time (customer's car?)
Cricket: lost on camping trip...might have to look through camping stuff a little more thorough.
Civilian: beleive stolen out of work van... last place I remember it, didn't think to look for it for 4 or 5 days...stolen or lost.
Zowada: NO F'N IDEA.

I'm leaning towards getting another Zowada (I have a personal affinity for them...I cut my thumb pretty good opening it the first time  ), and something more sturdy for office/field.

Thanks for the interest, but I think it's more likely "How the HELL did this guy loose $400 worth of knives in a 4 week span?".

no offense and don't take this the wrong way, but maybe now you know to take better care and better precautions with your stuff....

Losing a $100 knife would r-e-a-l-l-y suck....

I use my FRN Native for work. I once left it on/under some boxes I had loaded and tied down on my P/U. It was going to be a long trip. I went through the entire flatbed and tore everything down to find that thing---wasn't going to leave it there not knowing for sure it WAS there!

Lesson learned: ALWAYS place knife back in pocket (on your person) after EVERY use.
My $52 Natiove is still with me today---beacause it would still really suck to lose that one too!

BTW, the NAtive is a great folder to restart your collection.

yeah, tell me about it.

At least I know where my Walther P99 is :D

to Guns&Knives: I was thinking about getting a Native again, maybe in 1/2edge this time. The only thing is I couldn't hold an edge too long on the Native... inherent problem or my F-up?

A little closing to the story: I had a fifth Spyderco I forgot I had until I looked thru my camping/fishing gear, and glad to say I HAVE NOT lost this one... I just found my Catcherman! Unfortuntley, not a good carry folder.

rhino-

Man that blows. Sorry to hear it.

Look on the bright side, though- if you get another Zowada you'd be getting the updated model in VG-10!

This of course, assumes you had the AUS-8 model to begin with...

All of the above mentioned suggestions were excellent, but if you can swing it, it's hard to beat the Viele if you want something a bit "dressier". Smooooooth. But I'd cry if I lost that one.

Good luck in your hunt for your new one!

Tell ya what Rhino, I am having a weirdly positive day, email me and I will shoot you a used Endura Pre98 on the house. No one ought to go edgeless. I have worn Pre98 Enduras forever, recently switched out to a Sebenza I got in trade, but have a spare p98 I will not miss to much. Full serrations. I will confirm your emai address from the forum here and shoot the Endura off to you in the mail in the next couple days. Glad I popped in here!

I'm stunned.

I can't express how much I appreciate this. Now I don't have to carry the Catcherman.

Well, Parker and everyone else...happy holidays...

PS: Parker-- I see your from Chicago-- go Bears! (I'm an Eagles fan, but have Anthony Thomas and Marty Booker in a fantasy league ;) .

Hey rhino-

I think you meant to grab Parker's e-mail addy, but you got mine instead...the position of the buttons on this new forum layout are a bit tricky.

No problem, though- I dropped you a line as well.

:D :D

As I said in my first post in this thread, it has been a long time since I have posted on this board.

In my initial forays into the bladeforums ( I beleive it was in a thread on what handgun people in the Spyderco forums carried), I remarked on how the Spyderco "family" reminded me alot of the Glock "family"...intensly loyal to the product, and sometimes even more so to each other.

I posted this topic as a release to blow off steam at my stupidity and carelessness... I NEVER intended it as a "pity me" post, or for anybody to help other than a "don't be so reckless nextime" kinda kick in the ass.

So to see the response I received from everybody, and especially the help I got from Parker and Firebat, I am taken back; even given what I know about the "family". I don't know what else to say other than thank you.

Your fellow Spydie afficianado,

Stealth Rhino

Rhino, we all get a bad streak. A lucky card falls from the deck every now and then for all of us. Out to you Sat or Monday.

Stunned? nah, welcome to the family!

Krazie, I do have a nasty little ugly-ass folder someone gave me as a vendor gift......Al Mar rip with some sort of serrated nail file...like all true knife people i could not throw it away!

You can have A-Train, he seems to be laid up a bit. We just have skit-luck with backs in this town, exhibit A, Curtis Enis, and let's leave any discussion of the great walter out of this!

Give me a team full of Erlackers any day. Anyone that fast and smart at his age will figure oput how to run and pass the ball in two years and run the league for ten after that!
