while making the char cloth also had the old carving set boiling(ya cant see the third piece as i broke off the fork-its in the bottom of the pan)to remove the resin or epoxy or whatever held the steel inside the stag handles.
the results:

to be honest i really prefer dryer lint or cotton balls with pj. but charcloth is the sentimental favorite. my gramps and my pops both made it and used it. they were sorta old crumudgeons, much like most of us... would rather use the charcloth flint and steel(never saw either of em use firesteel) than modern techniques they had ready access to. like this morning. i coulda used newspaper and a lighter but rather used dryer lint(no pj-just wasnt necessary) and a firesteel....
now i have three wonderful old pieces of stag for rehandling other knives or blanks. the carving set cost me $2 at a flea market. nice brass bolsters and big brass tacks for the butt.

this spring-like weather is making me antsy...
