Okay there is a long story behind me having this knife I'm told is in 90 something small Sebenza in BG42 steel. That has been a lesson in assuming

I'll try to do the nutshell version of it.

A woman was referred to me to see if I would be interested in buying a CRK that she had bought for her father to take camping. And then her father passed away before she could give it to him.

I was hoping for a Pacific or some other fixed blade based on it being for camping, and sadly assumed it as such.

She said she knew she wasn't going to get full price back out of the knife and that she would take half. And not realizing it was a folder I told her that I might be able to give her a little more than that if it was in good shape and everything was there.

So then she shows up with a small flat white box and I was really confused. Inside the white box was a small hand wrapped package that said "To Daddy, I love you."

Upon opening the box she started crying, seeing that, being a single dad of two daughters, my eyes started leaking as well.

She knew nothing about high-end knives. Her brother did all of the ordering from a CRK dealer in CA . So when the knife impacted one of the bottles in transit and busted it all over the cloth and birth certificate, she washed the cloth, and tossed the BC and wrapped it for her dad.

But while she was out of town working before she could get home for his birthday, he passed away.

So ironically here I am hoping for a fixed blade and end up with a folder that's too big for me to carry it because it's a full size Insingo 37 I think I'm really not clear on all these numbers, in maganacut.

So after it being checked out by another collector to be sure it was authentic, I traded for the smaller knife I can carry and carry on Sundays now just because I have it.

But can somebody tell me more about what I have? Was BG42 a thing for CRK? Were these made in tge 90s? Since I made an ass of myself by assuming, with me not really being a folder guy, I'd like to know more about what I have.

Thanks for your help.

My "Regular" (large) from 1998 is BG-42, which was an excellent stainless steel from Latrobe back then.
Thank you BG 42 is actually one of my favorite steals, which kind of took some of the sting out of getting a folder instead of the fixed blade I wanted LOL. But I finally bought the fixed blade I wanted.

Latter 90s to 2002 would be BG-42 and it would be refered to as a regular sebenza
You can find a lot of info in this thread
If you take it apart S30V which are after BG-42 will be stamped V next to pivot hole, BG-42 will have no stamp

Thank you for the information. I edited the thread to make the title more accurate. And this corroborates the information I got from the friend I got it from so I can just go with that somewhere between the late 90s and 2002 it is.

I'll go look through that thread and see if I can find more information like what the pocket clips are made out of Etc

Another indicator of birth is the stamps on the inside of the scales by the pivot hole ABC OR D for the quarter the scales were made plus year.you can get a look with a flashlight without removing scales. There could be variance between scale and blade being made but it will give you some info

So, going by all this, the markings being B 97 in both scales, it puts it made between April, May, and June of 1997 with a BG 42 blade.

Thank you for the information!

So, a Regular Sebenza Small then I take it?

The knife itself could have(or not) been made a little latter, since they make the scales in batches and use as needed, but still in that era.

Mistwalker Mistwalker you and I are a lot alike! I'm not much of a folder guy these days and I also love BG-42. You got yourself a great knife! I was lucky and finally found 2 great priced Small Sebenzas in BG-42 this week (they are in the mail right now) I will be carrying one in my pocket alongside my BG-42 fixed blade.
