I just got some pieces of bandsaw blade from a company that services timber mills. I am looking for some help in determining if it would be any good as a blade steel. I hope so, there is lots more where it came from.

The blade is about 11 inches wide, .07 inches thick and has teeth on both sides. I called the company to get some information on the steel. It is from Sandvik. The composition is

C 0.68%
Si 0.22%
Mn 0.37%
Cr 0.13%
Ni 2.1%
Cu 0.02%
Al 0.006%
S 0.007%
P 0.009%
Other 0.005%

Looking on the Admiral Steel web site, the steel that is most similar seems to be L6, which makes sense. A similar steel that they sell is SUBN-11 from Daido of Japan.

Thanks in advance.

Hey Phil, I don't know what the European designation of this steel is but you are right to compare it to L6. It's very close to 15N20 also. All of the nickel bearing carbon steels make great tough knives. Your's is a little on the thin side but would make good kitchen knives if you don't mind them discoloring. Good filet knives also but it will rust easily. It also would work well in a mix with something like 1084 to make damascus! So yes, you have some good stuff there!
