This stuff really is tough!

Well I had big plans of trying to put a textured/hammered finish on the flats of my CG BB13 with a pneumatic needle scaler. I had tried it on a few types of steel and got some nice results. Well.......that stuff ain't INFI. Other than actually polishing out a spot in the bead blasted finish, it had absolutely zero effect on it. Pretty amazing if you ask me.

That is very impressive indeed. I wish I knew more about steel. I would have assumed that's more associated with hardness than toughness but I am clearly wrong.

I'd be curious to see what it does to SR101.

Or you are correct and I used the wrong word. Lol! Either way, I was impressed that it wouldn't even smudge the tiny little ridges in the tooling marks.

very interesting.. sometimes when ya drop high dollar on a blade ya feel so protective.. ya subconsciously feels that it's more delicate than it is. that's how I felt years ago...until I beat on it :)

We have read over the years that even drilling hardened INFI is a real bear.

I could imagine. I figured that the needles of the scaler were probably made of some pretty tough stuff to withstand the impacts that they dish out. Yhey do wear some but there is never even a hint of mushrooming on the tips. After I reblasted the knife, even with a magnifying glass you can not find evidence of a single strike. I showed one of my coworkers and he said "Damn, I wish we could get teeth made out of that stuff for our road graders.". Lol!

Would probably have to work INFI in the annealed state in order for this type of tool to have any effect. Just too damned tough and hard otherwise!

I had a feeling that it would not do too much damage to it. You got to admit, if it would have worked it would have been a NICE finish that we would all wanted to get. :D

You would need to make a needle scaler out of several Nuclear Ice Picks to even have a chance with that. ;) I am pretty sure that hammered finish goes on before the heat treatment and gets polished up after.
