This is my first Christmas as a married man and so I get (have?) to participate in my wife's family's white elephant gift exchange. The limit is $25 and what better than something with a sharp edge on it? We leave tomorrow so something I can pick up locally (retail=$25) is preferred.

No restrictions on length, fixed/folder, etc.

Check out the Byrd line, I don't think anything in there is over 25$, all great knives...

I picked up a fairly nice Buck pocketknife at Sport Chalet for an uncle of mine. Retail was about $24.00.

Which was surprising... Sport Chalet is usually notoriously overpriced.

How about one of those Martha Stewart chef's knives from K-Mart? I got one after reading about it here, it's great for the price.

Victorinox Soldier, every time. It's a great knife, it's a SAK so no one's ever offended, and it's a prettier-than-usual SAK with the alox scales. You really just can't possibly go wrong.

Opinel or Byrds.

Opinel for works around the house or in your bag. (Always have one in my schoolbag)
Byrds in your pocket.

Definitely Byrds. They are nicer than many knives costing 3 or 4 times as much. Another option would be the Case Sodbuster or Sodbuster Jr. They're nice little, non-threatening, good looking slipjoints and can be had for less than $20. Case knives are very nice (most of them), and can be appreciated by non-knife people for their quality of workmanshp and the fact that they are not "tacti-cool". They're also American made, which is important to some.

You can get Case stuff much more easily than Byrd at retail. Ace Hardware carries Case, as does Lowes from time to time (low end models like the Sodbuster). I've only seen a couple Byrds retail, and those were at surplus stores or gun shops. Actually, I was at Lowes last night and I picked up a little Chinese, peanut pattern slipjoint with Stag handles for $13. It said bone on the package but I'd be willing to bet a lot of money that it's stag of some sort. I looked at it under a magnifying glass when I got it home and the very rough, nubby texture is real-I'm certain it's antler of some sort, it's not jigged. I've seen enough stag to know it when I see it. Pretty funny seeing the real thing being sold of as an imitation of itself. The knife itself is pretty nice for what I paid for it. Except for a couple poorly finished pins, it's perfect.

The Chinese are getting better at making knives every day.

I agree, great knife and my EDC

You might check out Wal*Mart. Some of them are reputed to have a pretty decent collection of Spydercos.

Sodbuster Jr yellow handle CV blade. Probably one of the best values on knives anywhere.

Check your Wal Mart for a Buck 112 in a commerative holiday tin for $25. Some stores have them, some don't.

Another vote for the Byrd's. IMHO, the G-10 Byrd's are the best buy in the knife business, G-10 scales and a great fit and finish for only $24.95.

Get a Buck 110. Through today, Dick's Sporting Goods has them on sale for $29.99, plus there is a $10 rebate available. If you can't make that sale, they are $29.99 everyday at Wal-Mart. May be a couple more or less, depending on when you get it, but if there is one All-American folder, I would say it is the Buck 110. Good quality, USA made, and a Lifetime Warranty.
