Once in a while a knife comes along that really knocks your socks off...instead of doing things you should be,
you're aimlessly fondling the knife for extended periods of time..........
But first, this is the beginning of the road for a beautiful knife...
Several times a year I purchase bars of damascus from Mr. Eggerling to send to makers. It's wonderful to actually handle and choose the steel bars for a future knife!
So off go two blanks of Robert Eggerling steel in the post, and less than two months later this stuuner arrives!!
This knife was a combination of efforts; my suggestions and Thita's design. My suggestion was to have the bolsters and scales flow into each other, with carving on the bolsters and blade. Also requested was a slim profile and pocket clip for a great carry piece, and a very slight hawkbill blade.
Thita came through with a beautiful design, carving not just the bolsters and blade but the pearl also, having all three flow into each other!
Fit and finish are superb; there are points where points should be and radiuses where they should be. The filework is intricate without being fussy, and perfectly symetrical.
And a beautiful pocket clip tastfully anodized to match the backspacer
The skill level involved in such carving is evident; however what is not conveyed by the pictures is how sturdy a knife this is. The lockup is tight and rock-solid, and releasing the liner lock is easy and butter smooth! The blade has an excellent distal taper and is very sharp.
Not only is the knife incredible, but Thita was a pleasure to work with and a person *really* interested in the quality of the final product. Before he mailed the knife he emailed me this pic:
Pretty similar to the third picture above,eh? But how good are your knife eyes? The next day I receive an email from Thita saying that he noticed the strip of nickel right by the tip, and thinking it might be a liability the tip was reground to the current one! Wow.
I've been carrying it for several days now, cutting and slicing as much as possible. The blade is still as sharp as hour one (gotta love Eggerling damascus!). I just can't stop touching this knife...from the flowing carvings in both the bolsters and pearl to the smoothness of opening to the perfectly sharp fit and finish, I'm taken aback at the quality of this piece. The above pictures (except for the bars of damascus) are Thita's pictures...here is a crappy pic from me, though the carvings on the blade are easier to see...
One of my very favorite carry knives to date! Great job Thita!
