I want to tie a thong to the handle of my new fixed blade, it has a hole for that purpose, and I have some nice cord, but am unsure as to what sort of knots to use and what sort of length people go for.

I figure its there so as not not lose my grip in the cold/wet or dark, and may not need it in the day, i certainly do not want it to get in my way when using it, nor getting it snagged on something if i need to draw in a hurry, so whats the current wisdom and what sort of knots do people use (photos apprecitaed!)

My english fails me, whats a thong when its not underwear ?? is it what is also reffered to as a lanyard ?

Hawkings. Yes, iBlade is referring to a lanyard in other words.

iBlade. Are you looking for one that loops around your wrist, or just a little extra tail?

I think everyone appreciates a little extra tail now and then... :) but what really counts is; how will iBlade like to use his lanyard? Personally, on a folder I like them short. I don't want mine to go around my wrist. I like it for the extra 'grab' when I'm reaching for my knife. For a larger fixed blade knife, especially a chopper or a bushcraft knife, I prefer it longer with an adjustable slider so it can go around my wrist if needed.

Different people like to use different knots on different parts of different lanyards! (Vive la difference!) There is a specific knot called, interestingly enough, 'the lanyard knot' and a quick search of YouTube will give a tutorial to tie it. For my folders, I like the lanyard to be more of a 'fob' and usually tie a four-strand box stitch knot about three inches long and finish with the lanyard knot to dress up the ends. Look at some examples of lanyards on YouTube and gets some ideas of what you'd like. Below are a few links to tutorials for tying lanyards.

These should get you started! Have fun designing your own.

I usually have a tub of lanyards in my shop, I find tying them quite addictive :D

This pic has a few "box stitched" fobs the big one is 550 cord with the insides still in it and the smaller ones have the inside strands removed.
There is a "monkey fist" and a few "snake knot" key fobs in there too.
The small braded one is done the same way you would do it with leather.
There is a few lanyard beads in there also

Stitchawl and Haze - thanks, thats just the sort of stuff i needed, and yes lanyard, for some reason my eloquence deserted me yesterday...

Haze thats some amazing work - I don't suppose you sell them by any chance...

I dont actually sell them on their own, I just always put one on the knives I make or pimp for people as a small extra.
One or two seem to go missing when I have visitors at the shop as well

If you want one just drop me a line and I'll do you one for free.

Unfortunately at the moment you can have any coulour you want as long as its green,
I'll get round to picking up some other coloures of 550 cord soon though. :p
