I love stupid choppers.

Big, nasty, chunky choppers that look filthy.

That’s what this is, completely and totally unapologetically.

The project started as a platform to test some new handle materials, in a unique construction, and so far I think it’s worked. The rest of it is just pure window dressing, done up in forced patina and rust browning for fun.

The 11” blade of .200” thick Crucible S7 steel has been etched in the fashion my buddy Rick Marchand Rick Marchand does (mine is a tragic version, compared to how flawlessly he executes his), with forged mild steel hardware that’s been rust browned.

The handle is comprised of a Terotuf frame, clad in a novel compressed cork material that cuts and machines akin to a hardwood, but yet remains with that distinctive cork ‘give’ to it. The construction is then sleeved in Kevlar, and laced in resin-soaked tsukaito.

Overall length of this pig is just a tad over half a yard.

The official weight, Elliott, is ‘stupid’.

Seriously, it’s insane.

It’s so heavy, that I weighed it, and intentionally forgot, so I wouldn’t know just how stupidly heavy it is.

😬

I’ll go weigh it again and report back.
Wow, you really channeled your inner Carothers with that reply. For a moment I wasn't sure where I was...

☺️

🤣

Well, I’m trying to find a good way to put a spin on it that doesn’t sound ridiculously heavy, and I can’t.

Total weight is 27-1/8 ounces, or 1 pound 11-1/8 ounces.

Roughly 1.5 ounces per inch.

Heavy, Elliott. The answer is it’s heavy.

Yeah, that is heavy. I'm not man enough to use that tool in the manner required.

BRAWNY!!!
This post demands a vid of you whaling on something with it so we can appreciate its Godzilla nature!

See Elliott’s post. I’m not man enough to use it, either. 🤣

At least, not for very long. Still, I whacked it into a few things, and it sinks to a rewarding depth without all too much effort. The effort comes in having to keep picking it back up. 🤣

Awesome piece Matt, so nicely proportioned. 👌

Thanks, bud. We’re still getting around to calling, aren’t we?🤦🏻‍♂️🤣

We’re awful. Maybe not a bad thing - as long as life is busy, in a good way! Still, I need to make an effort. Stay tuned…

Certainly not a fillet knife, but the weight is li line with bolos, kukries, billhooks and similar wood processing tools.

Guess the sarcasm was a little too vague, sorry. Bit of inside joking betwixt me and Blues.

I own a Japanese Nata with a much shorter blade that’s in the same range of weight as this - I’d guess that the additional length of my blade will make it a better performer. Decidedly different geometry, though, and not exactly the same intended application, although application tends to hinge on circumstances…
