those who live in NYC

There are small shops here and there in the outer boroughs, but they're not particularly easy to find, nor are they really worth the effort if you're planning to stay in Manhattan proper.

Where are they? I'm willing to go around. Are the prices above retail? In manhattan, there's also tents and trails, but..they're kinda..shoddy

Well, there are army/navy stores throughout all 5 boroughs, I looked into the window of one on 8th Avenue, somewhere between 40th and 46th Street.

There's one store in Queens that I frequent, unfortunately the owner was hit by one of the NYPD's publicity raids and now only sells fixed blades, SAKs and multitools... gets some interesting custom pieces, though. Not such a fun place to visit anymore if you don't know the guy. Great for knife conversation, though. Good designer, too. There's this one place in Chinatown, near Canal and Broadway, a mall kiosk. I'm sure they got hit as well, so I don't know if they're still around. Cheap crap mixed in with some surprisingly high-end production pieces.

Prices... generally you'll see sticker prices close to retail. But the stores I go to don't object to benign haggling, and if you're friendly, they'll occassionally throw an incredible deal at you.

For in-stock variety, Paragon is basically it. But if you still want specifics, feel free to PM me.

where can i try knives besides paragon?
By "try" do you mean play with?
If you mean buy, I would buy online. In fact I would go to
http://www.onestopknifeshop.com/
and buy there. You'll be helping support this forum every time that you do.

The only other place I could suggest "trying" knives would be at the Nov. and March knife shows held in NYC. Play with production and customs, meet the makers and manufacturers and a bunch of fellow knifeknutz. It don't get any better than that, except of course for Blade Show in Atlanta. ;)

The Kiosk, I haven't even heard of. Iceberg Army Navy got hit..=/
Self Defenses on 54th and 8th only has flashlights and pepper spray and not good stuff at that

As far as I know, Paragon Sporting Goods (18th St. & Broadway...Just north of Union Square) is the only place left which has anything near a decent selection of the better known production brands. They also sell 'custom knives' and, so far, have had a table at all the annual knife shows here in Manhattan.
Nearby Paragon is Weiss & Mahony "The Peaceful Little Army-Navy Store" (19th St. & Fifth Ave.) has some folders, SAKs and multi tools, but not what I would call a large selection.

Iceberg Army-Navy had a very large selection up until recently but have now discontinued their whole knife department. Who knows when/if Paragon will be next.

BTW, kitchen knives, of every size, are available at home supply stores all over the city.

I was in the neighborhood today and visited Iceberg Army-Navy for an up to date look, knife-wise. They no longer have any fixed blades or folders designed for one hand opening.
Here's what's left of their formerly illustrious knife department:
The complete line of Victorinox SAKs and, what looks like, all of the Leatherman and Gerber Multi-Tools.

Best way to get full selection and fair prices is to take a ride and buy in
Nassau or Suffolk Counties.
An hour trip opens up a goldmine of anything you might want. ;)

JT's Knife Shop is a long trip from NYC. ABout 2.5 hours. Your best bet is to go to the knife manufacturers site and do a search for dealers.

Are there any good stored in upstate NY?
I'll be going to Canada and want to visit and shop for knives and some military surplus stores.

Great suggestion. Hey, PhilL--hope all is going well in your new location. :)

Two well-stocked brick and mortar stores are outside New York in the town of Seaford. One is TNT Gunnery and the other is the Bladesman. They are close to one another also. Well worth the trip. Plenty of prodo's in both of many makes and models. I would say these are the go-to places in between the twice-yearly New York knife shows. You'd be hard pressed to find customs there, but a nice range of goods nonetheless.

IIRC Seaford is east of Rt 110.
On Rt 110, just about opposite of the amusement park, is American Outdoor Sports.
Haven't been in a couple of years but they had a nice selection.

Sports Authority (Northern Blvd & Broadway in Queens, Northern Blvd stop on the R train) had a basic selection last time I was there, 8-12 months ago.
