Hey all, I need a favor of those of you with hip replacements. I had my Right side done 9&1/2 yrs ago, and it's time for my left side. Just had my preliminary doctor appointment yesterday, and there were some new things being discussed in regards to both the implants and post-op treatments regarding low-dose radiation to reduce calcification.

I am looking to hear from those of you that have had this done recently enough so I can pick your brains about your experiences. This most certainly can be done by PM here. Don't bother trying to email me... my work computer is STILL () out of commision.

Looks like my surgery will be in mid October this year.
Thanks in advance for any answers.

My father-in-law is having both sides of his hip replaced on this coming Monday. If you have specific questions, I could ask him.

Both sides done at once? Wow. I guess the advances they have made in the last 10 years are phenomenal. I was told my recuperation time has been cut in half. Last time I was out of work for 8 weeks. Doc told me I could be back in 3-4 with help and a cane. My techs already help me out quite a bit, so that won't be any different... just the cane. The new prostheses are smaller and require an incision about half to a third of what I had. Simply amazing.

Suicy... I'd be interested if you can keep me updated on how his surgery and rehab goes.

Anyone else?

Ask one of the custom knifemakes for a custion CPM 154 CM ball and socket joint with filework. You could even get some inlay or scrollwork done too. As for the surgery, I'll do it. I saw one on utube and it didn't look that hard. I have a nice set of hand tools.

ps if it calcifies, I got a dremel.

All kidding aside, prayers sent from MI.

As an update, I talked to my father-in-law today. Apparently he only is having the left side done, as opposed to both sides as I had been led to believe earlier. He will likely get the right side done within the next 3 or 4 years though.

I asked him how long he'll be off of work. His doctor told him 4-6 weeks, but he said he is going to try to stretch it to 8 weeks to get him at least beyond labor day. He's not looking forward to the recovery, but he is so hobbled he knows he needs it done.

Best of luck Mongo. Props out to a fellow (ailing former) prop. Best of luck- sure hands to the cutters & a full and speedy recovery for you. Kick ass. You'll have a new set of stems to tool around on.

Well, geeeez. Thanks all for the well wishes and stuff, but I'm not going yet. I'm still in the gathering info phase and waiting for my appointment. I have to find someone to work for me, and or several people. This is proving to be a pain in the buttocks all by itself. I've been doing some research, and have decided to go with the radiation therapy, as long as it doesn't melt the boys or my pooper. I am hoping that someone knows someone who has had this, and the new breed of prostheses put in recently. Suicy, I will be following your FIL's experiences.... I think he will do fine. My father had the same type of prostetic I have put in when he was in his late 70's to early 80's, and he did well. It's much easier now, so they say.

My father-in-law had his surgery yesterday early afternoon. All went well, and he was even joking that he is the six million dollar man (cue sound effects). He is in a lot of pain, but much of that is due to the fact that he refused some pain medications. His therapy required him to be up and on his hip by last night already. He spent the night in the hospital, but will come home today. Overall he seems to be in good spirits.

I am about 5 years out on my first replacement...if I can make it that long. I had heard that a doc at Duke University is using a substantially larger ball, and taking more bone out of the socket before lining it. The result is a longer wearing, more stable hip. That was probably 2 years ago, and i havent seen anything on it since.

Suicy - wish your FIL good luck for me

Mongo - good luck down the road.

I had my left hip done last November and my right replaced 6 weeks ago. I just got back from playing 9 holes this morning. I'd be happy to answer any questions you might have, but seldom visit here anymore. I think a PM will still alert me by email though.

Will do. Thanks.

My FIL came home from the hospital today, one day later than expected. I am not sure what the exact issue was, but the doctors just wanted to keep him around for observation. He is finally taking the pain medication, which means he is mostly incoherent. There is still pain, and he is still sore, but that is still to be expected this soon after surgery. So far his therapy has gone well.

I guess I have neglected to keep Mongo updated on the FIL's hip surgery. He had some complications following his surgery - not with the hip, but with his knee. A week afterwards, his knee was more swollen than his hip, which was still considerably swollen in its own right. His knee was all locked up, and he couldn't move it. I think he spent more time in therapy getting the knee back in order. The doctor has all but admitted there was a screw up in surgery, as this is highly unusual.

Despite the complications, the FIL is doing reasonably well. He gradually was able to move off of a walker to a cane, which he is still using. He still isn't back at work, nor is he driving. If he had a desk job, he'd probably be back at work, but he works in a paper mill which requires physical labor. I believe he is completely weaned off of his pain prescription meds, although he may still be using ibuprofen.

He still has a pretty good attitude towards things. He's hoping to be back at work in October, which would be almost three months after the surgery.

Thanks Suicy... sorry to hear your pops is having trouble. How did they screw up his knee? I have a feeling that I'll do better than expected post-op. I'm already pretty hampered at work now. It is very difficult to stand in one spot for any length of time. Doing a simple surgery is agony to me now. No more "good days, bad days".... just bad and worse. I'm counting the days until my surgery.
