Thought I lost my CS Marauder, but found it again. It was in an older get back to the world pack I had set up if my car left me in the middle of no where again. I decided it was time to get that other one I been meaning to get. I see CS now stone washes them. I liked the nice mirror finished one as it doubled as an emergency signaling device, but I mostly want another one for it being SS and a hunk of good sized good steel for large medium duty tasks. With its hollow ground blade, its a bit limited in its capabilities IMHO from the heavy stuff I do with my larger knives. But still if you use it for just steel vs wood, meat, and most other stuff it works pretty fine for those tasks. If CS put a Saber Grind on the Marauder I bet the blade would be a lot more durable and able to do even a wider range of tasks. For a hunting, camping/foodprep knife it is great at those tasks! The Hollow Grind on the Marauder does make it able to handle the more more finer and profient and more controled cutting tasks and stripping meat from bone tasks I found, but for bone breaking I think a lot of people used it and found the blade chip out. Well that's a hollow ground for you, a thinner edge that lets you make finer cuts, makes manufactering easy for the lazier producers, but the finer edge is more prone to breaking when hitting hard things with fine edges. That's why I use the Marauder for medium tasks (During Big Critter cutting season it does come in handy for trimming meat off of bones and cutting them damn tendons), wood on steel tasks and such. I figure CS does a decent heat treat on the Marauder, using common sense. For a nice "Light" large knife belt knife, it sure does come in handy from small machette to using the curve of the blade to cut open them trout. Glad I found mine again, but I had to order another one this time. I have been using my 420HC woodsman for about the same tasks, but the CS marauder gives one more field options and when a more secure sheath is needed, the CS Maurder is hard to beat.
Is CS going to still keep producing the CS Marauder? It seems hard to find at times.
I was wondering what the heck was with that Serrated one...but my weird Brother saw it and for some reason he likes that one, and fully serrated blades...well he does work fishing off of Alaska so I guess he knows what he needs.
For a christmas present I ordered him a Cold Steel Kobun Tactical Fixed Blade Knife with Sheath, Serrated. Saw the blade length and figured he might get some use out of it. If the serrations get knocked off he can always sharpen the knife to have an edge I guess. The 5.5 inch blade with a real non hollow grind Tanto point also should be a big plus! I know from my own Recon One Tanto, its tanto end I use a lot for many tasks. That knife looks serviceable and is affordable and in Aus8A, a good decent steel. And if it breaks or goes over board, one may wince at its loss but it would be easy to afford another one.
