Thought I was going to lose my Journeyman tonight...

I have company visiting over the Thanksgiving holiday, and showed them around NYC today. We ended up at the 9/11 Museum and as the line moved up and we got nearer to the entrance, I realized I had forgotten to leave my Journeyman in the car.

They had metal detectors and security up front, and I thought I might have to give it up and lose it. As we got up to the door, I told the guard that I had a knife with me, and he said if it was a small knife it would be fine. I told him that it wasn't "small", and so he asked to see it. His eyes grew wide and said that I had a machete with me. I laughed and said that it's a legal-sized carry. He told me to just inform the guard at the x-ray scanner up ahead and see what he says. I got up there and asked if there was a way for them to keep it until our tour was over. He just told me to wait, and another officer came over and asked to see the knife. He examined it, asked me a few questions, told him I was former Navy, with no law enforcement background, and told me to stay put, then he just walked away with my knife! He came back about a minute later with a blue ticket and told me to come back to that same spot when we were done and I could collect my knife.

When we were done, I went back and a female security officer kept anyone from going back to where the scanners were, and so I just told her the situation and showed her the ticket. She told me to wait and came back less than a minute later with my Journeyman. How cool was that?

That could have turned out worse than it did, I'm glad it worked out for you.

FDNY 343, Never Forget!

Murphy and his law was sleeping, right?

Glad it turned out ok :-)

Would be a shame to loose it...

good thing you got it back

i remember one time when the german police searched my car they almost confiscated a 3,5 gerber covert folder that was lying in a storage compartment in the drivers door: didnt you know it is illegal to carry a one hand open knife in germany? - no, but i dont carry it... but it is readily accessible...

told them i austria we can carry any knife we want - and they gave it back... :D

Awesome that you got it back. I have had to check knives in at Government buildings before and have always got them back when I gave them the ticket, nothing ever as large as the Journeyman though.

In this day and age, they were Very cool about it...you had luck on your side no doubt.

Normally, I'd have one of my smaller knives or a slipjoint with me in NYC whenever I'd be there for work. It must've slipped my mind yesterday since I wasn't in "work mode". It dawned on me during lunch when we needed a knife to cut something, I realized I shouldn't just whip out the Journeyman in a crowded NYC restaurant. I guess I was too excited when I found a parking spot afterwards and forgot to check myself before leaving the car. Gettin old.

The same thing happened to me - although it was my pre-Emerson days, so it was a Spyderco.

I too owned up before I got to the scanners and whilst I got asked some questions without exception everyone was polite, professional and even friendly.

Got to love that!

I had to go back out of a federal building once and bury my EDC at the time Benchmade Nitrous Blitz in a planter under some leaves to keep the guards from taking it. They wanted me to go all the way back to my car and leave it there.

It was quicker to hide it, but that would be much more difficult in NYC, especially near 1TC!

Glad you were able to get it back, gooey!

Getting your knife confiscated has to be one of the worst feelings in the world.
