I have company visiting over the Thanksgiving holiday, and showed them around NYC today. We ended up at the 9/11 Museum and as the line moved up and we got nearer to the entrance, I realized I had forgotten to leave my Journeyman in the car.
They had metal detectors and security up front, and I thought I might have to give it up and lose it. As we got up to the door, I told the guard that I had a knife with me, and he said if it was a small knife it would be fine. I told him that it wasn't "small", and so he asked to see it. His eyes grew wide and said that I had a machete with me. I laughed and said that it's a legal-sized carry. He told me to just inform the guard at the x-ray scanner up ahead and see what he says. I got up there and asked if there was a way for them to keep it until our tour was over. He just told me to wait, and another officer came over and asked to see the knife. He examined it, asked me a few questions, told him I was former Navy, with no law enforcement background, and told me to stay put, then he just walked away with my knife! He came back about a minute later with a blue ticket and told me to come back to that same spot when we were done and I could collect my knife.
When we were done, I went back and a female security officer kept anyone from going back to where the scanners were, and so I just told her the situation and showed her the ticket. She told me to wait and came back less than a minute later with my Journeyman. How cool was that?
Not quite ready to give this up.
