Hi guys, I just joined a few days ago after about a week of reading. I bought my first real knife (Spyderco ATR) right after college about 3 years ago, and I've been expanding my Spyderco collection since June. Now I have 7 total.

I actually started reading BFs because I was reading about Sanrenmu's. And before you guys tear me a new one for buying knock-offs, in my case at least, they are probably going to increase the chance of me buying the high-ends that are being copied. So far I've stuck with buying Spyderco's because I know the ergonomics, and I can tell (reasonably) whether I'll like a knife or not just by looking at it. That's a pro, since I don't know of any knife stores near where I live. Politics and IP aside, the offerings from SRM, Bee, and Navy, are a cheap way for me to explore different knife styles before committing $$$ to something I'm not sure I'll like.

Anyways, there's a lot of other great content here, so I decided to sign-up. So.. Hi.

Hello and welcome to BF! Sounds like you're off to a very good start to me so don't sweat it. If you hang around long enough you are likely to receive some negative comments but usually in the spirit of helping rather than just flaming ya so take it all in stride and have fun!

Welcome to the forums:).

One thing that many of us do is buy/sell/trade here on the forums to find out which knives we'll stick with. If you buy at the right prices, you'll generally not lose much or anything at all. You just have to familiarize yourself with the going prices on the secondary market, which you can find on the BST forums here and on eBay. If you'e patient, you may even make a little bit of money. It all goes back to knives eventually:p.

I'm not a huge fan of buying used, but I'll keep that in mind. It's sort of crazy how things grow on you. Up until a couple weeks ago, the only non-Spyderco I even had on my list was a ZT 350. And then I started watching some youtube knife reviews, which introduced me to the Sebenza. My first impression was incredulity. Who the hell would pay 300+ for that? Now I'm already thinking of starting to save for one, and I haven't even received my SRM ripoff to inspect.

My first quality folders after joining these forums were a Camillus Heat and a Spyderco Pacific Salt. Going beyond the ~$130 mark seemed pretty insane. I now alternate between 2 knives for EDC that each cost north of $400, which is nothing compared to some of these other guys/gals on the forums. I personally wasn't comfortable going into the +$250 range until I started going through the $100-$150 knife range (one of the funnest price ranges for folders IMO). Going from a $50 knife to a $300+ knife would've been too much of a jump for me back then.

I compare it to liquor. When I first started drinking I wouldn't have been able to tell a ~$10 brandy from a ~$120 Cognac. And though I'm not a big drinker, I can appreciate a good glass of Hennesy XO nowadays.

Yeah, I'm definitely not at the 200+ range yet, but I'm afraid that's right down the road I'm on. This is like some sort of drug high... every once in a while I'll get this moment of clarity, like, why the hell am I buying more knives? This one cuts just as well as that, and I already have 7, but then that goes away, and I'm back on the computer looking at a dozen more.

Welcome!
