Thought on a Ferrocium Bead

recently, i was putting some lanyards on a few of my knives, and i thought "what is somthing useful that i could attach to this lanyard (besides the knife)". and then the thought struck me, a bead made of ferrocium! seems like it would be possible if somone who did alot of machining wanted to make a few. the only con i would see would be that you would have to make the lanyard long enough for the bead to reach the knife.

if one were to try out this set-up, they could also put a fatwood bead on the lanyard. is there anyone who can do this? just curious to hear some of your thoughts.

thanks in advance.

It would be irritating to use if it were a small bead. If you went with an oblong bead, maybe 2 inches or so, then that would be neat though

I agree - you woudl really have to think about a striking system that would work well with a bead. I think some thought would come up with something cool.

i was thinking that in order to get a decent sized hole, i might want to start with somthing a bit thicker than the typical ferro blank.

Saltwater and ferrocium are not a good combination. Sweat can have some deteriorating (certainly not as much as total saltwater emersion) effects too. I'm going to say "no go" on this one unless the bar is coated with varnish or clear nail polish.

You have a couple things working against you. first the mischmetal/ferrocium is vary brittle as well as abrasive, this leads to explosive machining pressures. So the beads would likely blow apart while machining. The only tool I'm aware of that could be used would be a solid carbide drill with copious coolant.

Once the bead was completed there would still be a problem of fragility to deal with as the tube would be thin walled. It would still probably only last a couple uses.

Plus I'd like to watch the youtube video of the greatest spark show on Earth while drilling out a ferro rod! Kev' that Pic' in your avatar is not in your favor, maybe try a new one...

I've drilled ferro rods. They don't spark like you think they would.
