i have the lowly Metro keyring knife in 420J2, i really didn't like it, so i decided to add it to a saltwater corrosion test i was doing on an H-1 Spyderco Pacific Salt, it was the Spydie, a CCC balisong, a cheapo Sheffield hawkbill knifelike metal object, and the Metro

the testing chamber was a 2.5 gallon aquarium filled with about 52 oz of cold, fresh Atlantic seawater from York Harbor beach, Me

a bubblewall connected to an airpump was used to create salt spray/foam

knives were left in a highly corrosive, highly reactive salt spray for 36 hours (test ended early due to water contamination with rust)

the Sheffield knife-shaped object began rusting in an *hour*, *ONE* hour and it was out, the CCC bali. took 24 hours to show it's first rust spots.....

the only knives to survive unscathed?

the Spyderco Pacific Salt (that's a given as H-1 *will not* rust)
and the lil' old Metro, not a spot of rust on it, no discoloration, nothing

420J2 may be my least favorite steel, but i have to grudgingly admit i was impressed, i was expecting the Metro to be one of the first to fail, it outlasted the other lesser knives, it's been put back on my keychain, it earned it :)

420j2 is a great steel for certain applications. Blades just don't happen to be one of those applications. But in a knife the size of the Metro, blade steel really doesn't matter.

It is a very corrosion resistant and tough steel, but very soft and not too wear resistant.
