There is a Edge Pro Apex 4 that is slightly used on another forum for sale. I haven't done a lot of research, but it seems the reviews are fairly high. I decided to take it because it retails for $255 and I picked it up for $160. Is that a pretty good deal and input on using them would be appreciated. I've been using a standard sharpening rod, diamond sharpener, and a strop.

Sharpening "stuff" belongs in Maintenance, Tinkering, & Embellishment.
General Knife Discussion is for discussing knives themselves.
There are several threads on the Edge Pro, stones, and the mods people have done to them. DO a search of the forum and you will find many hours of good reading.

It is kind of a good deal depending on the condition of the item and stones. The edge pro pro is so much better than the edge pro apex in my opinion that it is really hard for me to recommend the apex at all. I am not a fan of the EP stones but they work. I am a huge fan of using diamond stones on the EP. I would have picked up the very basic EP Apex i could find brand new which would be around $165. I would buy a medium and fine-extra fine stones for it and practice away on crappy knives.

Thanks, I ended up getting the Edge Pro Apex yesterday and it looks pretty new. He said he only sharpened about 5 knives on it and ended up getting a belt sharpener. I played around with it last night and I'm still learning how to put an edge on. Seems to work pretty well, but I still can't get them to be as sharp as the Survive Knives factory edges. I guess it'll take some practice:)

I like the Apex and it works well for my needs. It has some disadvantages when compared to the Pro and to the Wicked Edge (probably too much to go into here), but there is a lot written about these systems, YouTube reviews, etc. I think the price that the OP paid is great, as long as the stones are still in good shape. I would not consider myself an expert sharpener by any stretch of the imagination, but I have been able to get good results with the Apex on a variety of steels. I just started out practicing on some of my cheaper knives with softer steels and slowly worked up the confidence to sharpen my more expensive knives with a wider variety of steels. I've been very pleased with the results I've gotten.
