thoughts and questions on Deep Carry / lowriders

First off - I am a fan of deep carry. Most of my knives have been modified.
Then today, I dropped my BM 960 onto concrete. It is a bit slick to begin with - but at least the new dings will give me more grip :(

I started thinking about why I deep carry.
I came up with some reasons not too:
- harder to access knife
- knife sits lower in pocket, digs into thigh/keys/everything more

Then I tried to think of good reasons to deep carry.
The only one was discretion. Like not having people stare (although never happened to me). Or having my wife give me a look (you don't really need a knife to go to Costco, now, do you?)

So: am I making a big deal out of nothing? Should I just be proud and happily show off my knife? Do non-knifeknuts really care (I've read the threads, and I guess a few have gotten looks...)?
Are there other good reasons to deep carry?

thanks for any thoughts.

Deep carry reduces the chances of your knife handle bumping into things as you move in tight spaces. But discretion is the number one reason to deep carry, IMO.

Carrying in the pocket with no clip is a lot more discreet than lowrider clips are. Unless it prints, the in-pocket folder is invisible to the naked eye. Of course, without a pocket sheath, you run the chance of lint in the lock (problem with lockbacks) and the dreaded sideways knife at the bottom of the pocket.

i carry my knives regardless of carry height, i actually usually loosen the clip so it is accessed easier.

i usually have a dress shirt on and jeans weather it be work or on weekends so i don't have a issue with a exposed clip just know your local laws. i know for me if i go to ny for the evening i just drop the knife in my pocket because its only legal to 100% conceal carry. on the other hand if I'm at work and someone sees my knife and they ask why do i have it at work i turn to them with a funny look welding the chef knife i use 90% of the day at work and laugh. then i simply say i forgot i had it with me. if it bothers the people around me or draws unwanted attention i just carry differently, such having the pocket clip in between my pants and belt, hidden from view and the knife under my waist of my pants against my boxers. but for the most part i really could care less about a exposed pocket clip where i live, my clothes usually hide it.

All of my edc's have deep-carry clips whether purchased, or the original clip modified. Like above, number one reason for me is discretion. All my deep carry's also have a clip that is between 1.25" to 1.50" in length, for more discretion. I usually cover my clips with black stair-step tape, a 3M product, and it makes pulling them from my pocket much, much easier.

I don't worry about concealment with my EDC because why worry if it's legal and you might actually have to use it in public?

When I need my EDC, I pull it out and use it regardless where I am, for the most part of course.

Deep carry is a clean look but it isn't practical to me and in fact, it isn't practical as far as ease of deployment either, IMHO.

I like the bayonet clip on my SOG but don't really care about carry height. Kershaw rake on my now in public with 1cm of handle and the lanyard out in view.

I can't stand deep lowrider clips. You can't reliably wave draw a knife without approx 1.5" plus lanyard sticking out.

How do you get them so short?
Ever have a problem with losing a knife?
thanks.

I've never understood the whole "concealment" and "discrete carry" aspects of a deep carry pocket clip. Most people who I've talked to about them, and it's been quite a few over the years, don't know it's a knife, regardless of whether or not there's an inch or so sticking out of my pocket. And people who know what a knife's pocket clip looks like know it's a knife whether there's a bit of the handle popping out or not. I've also heard people argue that an aggressive or tactical-looking knife will get less attention with deep carry, but again, I can't think of too many pocket knives that look particularly threatening when you can only see the very tail end of them. I never met anyone who knew or cared that I had my Voyager X2 in my front pocket, and if they did, they certainly never bothered raising a stink about it. If I really wanted my knife hidden from view, I'd take the clip off entirely, so as not to give it away at all.

For myself, I like the "look" of a deep carry clip, since it's so clean, aesthetically. However, I don't care enough to seek them out or give them preference in what I choose to carry. Seems to me that the extra bit of knife riding outside of my pocket makes it easier to grab when I need it, and there's less chance of the knife scuffing and rubbing against my Micra or SAK at the bottom of my pocket.

Oh, and SOG: thanks for uglying up a very nice low-ride clip by stamping your silly logo into the thing! RUDE.

Far as losing go's, none. I use a dremel tool, cut it to the length I want, and then use a handheld butane torch to heat and bend the clip as needed. Even on a long clip you are only going to get that one spot that holds the knife to the pocket, the same can be achieved with a smaller clip.

I like lowrider clips on smaller knives. For me its about the amount of knife in my pocket. I do prefer less knife sticking out of my pocket when clipped if I am wearing cargo pants so that I can fasten the flap over the clipped knife. I am very happy with my STR lowrider clip on my para...when I got it done it was like carrying a whole different knife.

Agreed! I have an STR on a BM940 - and looks like the para may be next...

Makes sense. I was thinking the deeper/longer the clip, the more material it had to rub before disengaging out of the pocket. I tend to keep my clips a bit loose, but short and tight is worth a try.

Here's a pic of the one I put on my BM Adamas 275, and the one I made into a deep carry clip for my John W Smith SD-3.
