I have a Boker+ Gnome on the way as a gift from my wife, which I am truly excited about.

Frankly I wanted it because I liked it and wanted one, but I also really like my knives to have a use of some sort.

My question is this; What practical use does the gnome have?

If you own one what do you use it for?

Does the small size cause any trouble with use?

Small game/fish field dressing, lots of emergency medical applications, preparing small wood/tinder to start a fire, anything you would ordinarily use a folding knife for but might need to know the blade would not close or break on you. The worst injury I ever received in a remote situation was on an island in the 1970's where I had to sail 24 hours to get back to people and I tried to cut a few tiny saplings to make an improvised cooking grate. The fairly high-dollar folder I had in my pocket failed. The back spring broke in half where the pin was located and the knife closed on my hand. The availability of a roll of electrical tape allowed me to wrap the bleeding small artery very tightly while keeping circulation and get home to stitches. But I never relied on any folder again when I was far from medical attention especially if I was having to get myself home. This is a great and strong little knife!

I like small fixed blades and carry mine often. Knives like the Gnome, Izula, WM1, A.G Russell Woodswalker, Mikro Canadian, FireAnt, etc.

Some of them, like the Gnome, have very short handles. That's great for ease of carry (short overall length), but diminishes their usefulness a bit, which is why I prefer pocket fixed blades with larger handles (like the WM1). I find the short blades to be quite useful for most regular tasks, except perhaps for food prep.

Would be nice to have in compact spaces like a tackle box. Opening boxes or just not taking up too much space on the desk. I wish I had something like that when I was cutting tons of paper and foam board in school.

I made myself a knife modeled after that one with leather scales. Made a pocket sheath for it and ive been slipping it in my pocket as edc for some time now. I have found it to be a useful deign for opening boxes and other tasks of the like.

any chance of a pic, sounds interesting

If your not talking to me then sorry. I cant figure out how to put up a pic( I'm on my phone) it just says type in a URL but I just want to use a pic from my phone. Any help? I guess I'm still pretty new here.

You have to host the photo on photobucket or a sight like that to host the photo here. Very easy to do and free...... :)

Cool little knife - would be a good edc to open packages or set on the park bench and make sharp pointed sticks?..... :D

right Job, I have played with rubber handles, but not leather. my versions are crude but usefull. Sorry that I cant help with pics as I too am clueless--my cell phone has a dial AND a crank!

edit I do like small fixed blades over folders in spite of the hassles of complying with my respective laws. Size matters, but historically man thrived with much smaler blades than WE tend to NEED?

I had one it was really cute, really nice blade. The lack of a handle basically was a dealbreaker and I gave it away. Replaced it with a CRKT Minimalist which was a joy until I gifted that one. If I had to do it over while moving forward I would jump on a Boker Subcom, another CRKT Minimalist without question, Boker Nano or the real Folts Minimalist with the better steel.

I don't have the Gnome, but I have a CRKT Minimalist which is in the same category. My favorite way of carrying was on my belt either at the 11 position or 1, I also slipped it into the watch pocket a couple of times and it worked well there too. My uses for it were opening mail/packages, cutting limes, and other small tasks like taking tags off clothes.

For most of my urban day I don't think I need a longer blade, but I prefer to have more options by carrying a longer blade. For the longest time I tied it to the side of my boot and just kept it there in case I ever needed it.

I have a Gnome with leather belt sheath, and wish it came with the kydex. Then I could clip it inside a watch pocket on my jeans and use itd the same as a folder. I have a HAK that I attached a NiteIze clip with 3M VHB tape and it works great that way.

The Folts Minimalist is on a neck chain so it's pretty much unused. That's the issue - if you put these somewhere they can't be easily accessed, they don't get used. I may add the clip to it, too.
