What are you guys opinion of the Northwoods Indian River Jack

I'm still new to traditionals and in fact don't own one yet. (Have the BF forum knife on order tho!!! :)
But this knife has had my attention and I pretty much have my mind made up on buying it but just
wanted to see what others thought of it. It comes with CPM154 steel so no patina but for a user I
think it will excel. What do you guys think of traditional slip joints coming with newer updated steel?
The Ebony wood looks really sharp and it also comes with a black leather slip case which is a great bonus.
I know GEC has a stellar reputation but the one thing I dislike about most their knives is all the laser etchings
they have on their blades. Its why I'm very interested in this knife because it has a sterile main blade.

So let me know your opinions and if you have other recommendations please let me know. Thanks!!

That's a nice, clean, pocket friendly pattern. Should be an excellent user - I have no issue with using a "newer, updated steel" especially if we are talking about a stainless. I'd probably prefer CPM154 over 440C, even an excellent 440C. FWIW, I believe the Northwoods knives are currently made by GEC on contract.

I usually don't mind the blade etches, they are pretty easy to remove with a little elbow grease and some polish (flitz or similar). They also fade a good bit on the 1095 blades, as the blade patinas.

Hi,I just got mine a month ago, very sharp really comfortable in the hand and not scary looking to the non knife folks.
Plus 154CM is very good steel.
Regards

I believe the indian river jack is made by queen. I don't own one but they look like great users, good luck!

I gave one to my brother that was ATS-34 (I think) and it was was scary sharp.

I just replaced it with the white bone and it is taking longer to establish the edge.

I prefer to have a full convex grind on it and very sharp. It will not be my go to blade for work,

but will get handed down to a friend someday.

That was my understanding as well that the Indian Jack was made by Queen. I don't own one either but have been tempted.

They were, indeed, made by Queen.

The ATS34 was the only run that got the convex treatment from Bark River.

It is a great pattern with a gr8 blade. I had one in natural bone and it was nice except for the action. Perhaps it was a fluke and I must say the purveyor of the Northwoods line took complete care of me to my satisfaction.

O interesting. I thought it was a GEC knife. Well that kind of throws a wrench in my plans. I'm sure its still a greatly crafted knife I just want
to get a GEC made Northwoods. Now I'm eyeing the Presidential. Theres some in mammoth bark that look incredible. Would love to get a
fremont jack but looks like their out of stock. Any idea if another batch is coming soon?

I have been eyeing this one too, since it's a GEC build in stainless. Their own dang knives are hen's teeth in stainless.
I would not HESITATE if they produced the Presidential in stainless, as I've grown quite fond of twin-blade patterns like that.

A question for those of you who have an Indian River Jack produced by Queen Cutlery; is the fit, finish, walk and talk as good as GEC products? Does is have a half stop? Is the pull a good solid 7-8 or is it a weak 5- 6.

The presidential is in 1095.

The F&F of the Indian River Jack is not as good as on the GEC produced knives. That being said, it is very good. It does not have a half stop. The pull is probably 7-8 on my own scale.

The beauty of the Indian River Jack is that it is a traditional knife made with a powdered super steel. Queen is the only company who would build it for me.

Queen makes great knives. Their f&F is spotty. The Indian River Jack is better than their normal, but not up to GEC standards. This is a workhorse knife. You put it in your pocket and use it every day. It will impress you.

Thank you Derrick for your informed opinion. I have had Queens knives that in the fit and finish department were challenged. I really love the idea of a stainless super steel blade slipjoint but I have also been spoiled by GEC.
I am going to sleep on this one.

Derrick, I've seen enough of your posts now that I must applaud you for your straight-up integrity in describing the products.
Harley-Davidson dealers should do well to emulate your example. :D

Ha ha. I get in trouble when I lie. I hate cleaning my mouth out with soap.

Sometimes, I think I undersell stuff. I can't say enough how much I love the Indian River Jack. It is a super nice knife. You just can't order one expecting a masterpiece. They are hand made production knives. They are meant to be used. :)

I wish I said that as well as VictorLouis did. You really do tell it like you see it, the good the bad and the ugly. I respect that a lot.

Weren't the Mini-Moose made by Queen in ATS34 and convexed by Bark River, too? I have one in ebony and sure like it.
