I picked up a Buck 757 Camp axe for Christmas for my son who is going into Boy Scouts next February and who i take hunting with me quite often. It says its SAE 1045 steel (is this low carbon?), powder coated with the plastic handle.

anyone have experiance with one? is the steel treated to keep an edge? hi rust risk? anything you got, i would appretiate.

i personally have the Gerber/Fiskar axes and feel they are of good quality, just wanted to get my son something, and the Buck was on sale.

thanks - Eric

I never hold this axe but:
1045 is (0,45%) technically "medium carbon steel". Not too good for a knife but ok for an axe (I think someone stated here that GB axes are 1055).
It is probably treated for shock resistance rather than edge holding (with that low carbon, it wouldn't hold an edge too well anyway).
Rust is generally not that much of a problem (it is coated anyway).
Can't comment about sharpness, grind etc...
