Elmax steel, 0014 serial number, marked XXXX as a factory second. When I purchased the knife from the original owner I was told that it was a display knife from a blade show. The knife has been used and carried. Does the XXXX really kill the $ value of this thing. It is still of great value to me as a user. I have it up for trade and just wondering what folks think of factory seconds on knives? I am newer to the knife game.

XXXX on a Kershaw or ZT means that it is/was a Factory 2nd and it will reduce the value of the knife as compared w/one that is not so marked.

I only have 1 Kershaw -- a Shallot -- that's marked XXXX in my collection that I purchased "new" from Kershaw Guy because it was cheap to replace a Shallot that I lost before I started collecting knives and learned that that was not such a wise purchase.

There are now over 360 knives (including about 100 Kershaw/ZTs and over 160 Spydercos) in my collection and I never purchased another "2nd" again

BTW, Spyderco grinds a small notch along spine of the blade to denote their 2nds which sometimes can be hard to notice, especially if there's a lot of jimping on the spine nearby.

i dont think it kills the value if its a popular model or a discontinued and hard to find one. factory second usually just means the knife has a minor imperfection somewhere like uneven blade coating but is fully functional and safe to use

for example im pretty sure you could sell that zt for more than what the price was when it was new and in production if its in good shape

I disagree. No knife "collector" would pay as much for a 2nd as they would for one that's not.

Only someone who didn't know better or didn't care would but then that person would not be a knife "collector."

The blems they still sell are usually VERY minor, but you don't get the warranty. If I really wanted the knife and that was the one available I'd probably pay close to full price. But yeah, I wouldn't pay full price just on principle probably.

i think there are people who would if they wanted a particular discontinued model bad enough, i remember wanting to buy a kershaw offset factory second that was like 300-400 dollars but just didnt have the funds at the time, if i did i would have totally paid for it even though they used to be like $150-$170 new i think

There's no reason to pay as much for a 2nd than one that's not. You can always find a non 2nd version of a knife, even if discontinued. So, it really comes down to how much you have to spend and if you can only afford a 2nd, so be it but it's not because non-2nd versions of the knife cannot be found.

If the knife isn't available otherwise the price for both blems and non-blems go up. I'd pay normal price for a blem if it was all I could find and for some reason I REALLY wanted it. Sometimes I remember knives I had or saw 10 years ago and my desire outstrips MSRP given the lack of supply.

Does Kershaw warranty factory 2nds?
