I just obtained one of these and like it a lot. It is one of the titanium handled ones with the anodizing on it. I love that fact that it is so slim and easy to carry. It will be my edc until Mr. Mayo makes my knives(so if you are out there hurry them up so I can brag about them!). I mananged to obtain it at a knife shop that is here in Indianapolis that I did not even know existed. They accepted two of my knives in trade and I payed the difference.

I do have a couple of questions about it though. It is a used one and the person that I got it from didi not know much about it. What was the most typical steel used in this version? And even though it is a frame lock there is some up and down movement of the blade when it is locked unless I push the lock all the way in very hard. Is this normal?

My first custom was a DDR small Apogee and it's still a favorite.

I believe that all the Apogee's were CPM S90V (Darrel Ralph has recently stopped making them). The blade play definitely isn't normal -- I would suggest contacting Darrel about getting the knife a tune-up.

Probably 420V, but you never know. Customs have what customers order.
Send it to Darrel...shouldn't be any vertical blade play.

Fellow Hoosier,

I have two, one in carbon fiber, and one with rainbow anodizing, like yours. Both of mine are S90V. However, D2 and just about anything else could have been used. E-mail Darrel, he is quick to respond, and very helpful. And, no, the blade shouldn't have up and down movement.

I was disappointed when I heard that Darrel was discontinuing The Apogee. Here's one he made for me in Talonite. His last run of Apogees was a set of 20. This one is left handed and is serial number 1. I like it.

I just got a carbon fiber small Apogee and contacted the man himself. He said that the blade was cpm420V. Mine had an "M" on the clip, so that means it was made in 2000. On mine, the liner lock (basically an integral lock with CF slabs) just about doesn't make it snuggly to the locked position. I'm tempted to take it apart and bend the liner just a tad to make it tight. I really like the looks of the blade shape, as it is slimmer than the EDC. More gentelmanly, rather than tactical, IMHO.

Is mine special? Mine has full Ti liners (no cut-outs) with gold nuggetting showing through the cut-outs on the Carbon fiber. Was this a standard option, or was it a specific customization unique to this knife?

I really love my knife, as it is the first handmade one I own, and a fine piece of custom work. I traded two knives for this one at a knife show. If it weren't for trades, I would have the same old stuff forever.
