thinking of getting one of these. relatively cheap and looks alright. But whats the inside story on these? Are they any good?

It will do if you will do...

Seriously it's the standard by which other combat/field knives are judged.

Are there "better" knives? Sure, but the Camillus MKII is a legend, and has been working in the hands of troops for almost 60 years.

One step up would be a new Camillus/BK&T BK-7 Field knife or a Cold Steel SRK/Recon Tanto.

Good luck!

A battle-tested Classic, rough around the edges, nothing fancy or polished or chromed or fancified.

Does what it does very well, has no pretenses of being anything else, and maybe ugly to some.

But if you need a tough knife that's always there, doesn't actually mind being used and abused, and will live happily in bad environments waiting for emergencies...it'll be your best friend.

Look to some of the older Al Mar combat variants to see what a fancified version can look like.

BTW: They're probably 10 Times the cost, and you won't want to use them for anything messy that would discolor the blade.

The old Camillus will not have that problem!@

In 1969 I used the issued camillus marine combat for about
6 month in the field in S.E. Asia and found it to be OK. I traded
it in for a camillus pilot suvival knife when I was reassigned to
air drop duty. During the whole time I had the combat I used
it for stuff you wouldn't beileve and it always came through.

Remember, this was an issue knife so I didn't give a damn how I
used it. For it to survive the crap I put it through is sort of amazing
now that I think of it.

Nothing fancy, but it works like a charm. I loved the one I had. Can't believe I haven't gotten another yet. Have to remedy that.

great knife, has some pretty good sentimental value to me as my Dad toted one in the South Pacific for a number of years.

A little research let me find out that the Camillus MKII is the same knife that was produced in 1943. I love mine so much I got another.
They will sharpen up real well also.
