Who else thinks that there needs to be a rule on what members get what items other individuals sell. Some days a person post email sent on a post that says to post i'll take it and he then gets all the items. Then another member will post the same Ill take it rule and you will email them first and someone will post i'll take it in the thread and he gets the item. I feel that there needs to be one way not multiple ways.

I know you are/would like a cut and dried rule.....but...

The - "I'll take it" - is really just a standard way of saying "I would like to buy this knife-if it still available."

And most of the buyers here know this I think?
Some of the PM sent messages - are asking questions and maybe even hitting the guy with a low ball offer. Which does work some times? And they do that instead of posting - "Hey I'll give you this much right now for it?" in the for sale thread, which everyone else could see. And the seller may reply back privately that it's a deal.... instead of in the thread. So that trumps the I'll take it post.
Also - Bladeforums is NOT the only place these guys sell knives.
Makers will post their work on their own web sites and other forums for sale.
So even though you are the FIRST to post I'll take it - before any other post are made.
Someone else may have got it else were first......
And most buyers and sellers here know this - I think?

Knife makers - and I'm sure collectors too - want to move their knives FAST.
Because they like to eat......

So this is not going to change -

Edit to add - - Over the past nine years I've been lurking about here.
The I'll take it post works MOST of the time...... but like you have seen - not always.

I feel it's up to the seller to decide to whom they wish to sell, or not to sell. Maybe you're outside the USA and I don't want to risk the package getting lost, confiscated at Customs, or someone with sticky fingers along the way. Maybe you have no or very little feedback, and another interested party has a long history of perfect transactions. Maybe there's something about the way you communicate that puts me off or makes me feel uneasy. Maybe I just don't like you, and I'd rather my knife found a better home.

I don't like it, but an increasing amount of issues reported in GB&U, plus some rather suspect communications with potential buyers of my own knives, have turned me into a bit of a prick whenever I put something up for sale. "I'll take it" does not put you at the front of my line. Not if you registered a month ago, have 6 posts, and 0 feedback. Not if ask for special concessions that another potential buyer doesn't. And certainly not if you initially lowball me and vomit forth a fountain of anti-Semitic obscenities when I sell to someone else (yes, this has happened).

That said, I try to make this clear whenever I put something up for sale. It's nothing personal (unless it is), but when I sell something, I want the least amount of hassle or risk of being screwed, and that trumps being the first to say "I'll take it".

In the forum, and in the law, "I'll take it" is merely an offer to buy. It is totally up to the seller which offer he wants to accept.

Something to consider is some people will post an item for sale on other forums so even though you might have the first "I'll take it" on this forum it may not be the first they received. Not every seller, of course, even uses the first "I'll take it" format. When I try to buy something here I post the "I'll take it" followed by an immediate email and/or PM to the seller.

If those are the terms you are interested in, I'd suggest shopping at online stores/dealers, or maybe try eBay. We aren't all about cramming rules down anyone's throat. Bladeforums is the place, the details need to be worked out between the members buying, selling, and trading. I can empathize with your situation, but don't hold your breath for more rules, the system we have right now, works fine. If'n it ain't broke, then I reckon their ain't reasonin' to try an fix it.

Well said Rev! While Blade Forums does have its marketplace, I feel it's much more of a community. Me thinks the only rule that need be applied is the one that makes sense for both parties and what makes both parties the happiest in the end.

I had a person whom I was trading with offer to take my trade because I inquired first but his #2 in line had a better deal...he was still willing to except my trade (which spoke volumes of his character) but I told him he should take the other because it was the better deal. I felt I would have been the only one who felt he got a good deal.

Ultimately, I believe the system is working just fine.... Like Rev says If'n it ain't broke......

Best of luck

I always put "First to post in this thread gets it". That way all see who was first, and the person knows they're getting the knife without having to wonder if they are.
Thats the way I choose to do it because it just seems courteous to me.

I know if I'm buying and I'm the first to put the "I'll take it" in a thread I like knowing I'll get it instead of wondering if other deals may be going on behind the scene, or if its listed on another forum.

I agree with Rev though about not needing more rules. The mods have their hand full as is, and things run fine thanks to them.
