Hello,

I tried out some DMT dia paste (1 micron) on my strop, and it worked okay, but id like something a little grittier to work on the bevel, but I read some posts on here that said the 3 micron didnt work so well.

The DMT doesnt seem to be going very far in one tube. I might be using too much, I dont know, but it is getting used up pretty fast.

Anyways, my questions are:

What is a good 2-5 micron diamond compound, and should I pony up for some Hand American compound, since im burning through the DMT?

Thanks

I use my strops a LOT more than most and the diapaste tubes last me 6-8 months. A little goes a long way with this stuff.

If you want better then get some 1 micron HA, no need to go lower unless your sharpening razors.

Alright, I spose Im just a little paranoid that my strops arent coated with enough paste then.

Im not worried about a finer edge, I probably couldnt tell a difference anyways. But I need some compound in the 2-5 micron range to take out some of the deeper marks from the factory grind.

To remove factory marks you usually need to go to around 600 grit.

Judging from some of the pix and descriptions that I have read here, most people are over-compounding their strops. A little goes a long way and a lot is not going to fix what should have been done earlier in the sharpening progression. Most compounds last a lot longer than people think. A thimble full of CrOx powder would last a professional sharpener a lifetime.

With a lot left over to pass on the to kids!
I still have half a bottle of liquid Chromium Oxide I bought 15 years ago, and during the first year I used waaaay too much myself!.

My diamond pastes came in syringes, and they are still more than half full, despite being about 10 years old.

Compounds last quite a while on a strop.
