I've been wrestling with the idea of having

some work done a piece,but i hestitate...

do you feel it de-natures the makers vision or enhances it,will it affect the value of a piece one way or another..should I even worry about"offending"the maker

Lastly which engravers could we suggest I'm thinking classic elegant scroll work with a touch of gold...many thanks!

Once the knife is yours, it's your vision that counts. Though some makers might cringe when they see their vision "corrupted," it is the owner of the knife who should be happy with it.

That said, some collectors may feel that alterations detract from the value of a knife from the standpoint that it will no longer be the maker's true creation. Unless you're one of those collectors, I say go for it!

Some of the best gold engraving work I've seen is that of Julie Warenski. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her work.

To me it depends on the piece as far as to engrave or not.

I agree with Wolf and love Julie's work.
Some other people you may want to consider are Sam Alfono, Tim Herman and Jere Davidson. I also like the work of Fred Harrington and Ben Shostle.

The next knife that I'm having made to my drawings was designed with engraving in mind. I know who is going to do the engraving Ron Nott. I don't know who is making the knife though. I do know thatt Ron said to send him the knife for engraving before going for heat treating.

There is also a Fourm run by Steve Lindsey just for engravers, it's a fun place to lurk and you can learn a lot.

Gus, I don't know if you are aware of it, but Ben Shostle has lost his eyesight due to diabetes, and is no longer engraving. A tremendous loss.

Engraving is one of my favorite subjects.
I have several knives engraved every year and
you need to choose carefully. Don't spend big
dollars engraving a knife that can't hold up in value. You can do it for yourself, but in
the end you'll lose alot of money. Choose an engraver that does the style you want. I use:

Julie Warenski for gold inlay and scroll. She
is wonderful to work with. The Broadwell she did was featured here a while back.

Simon Lytton for English style. Among the best, very affordable. Simon come to the US
several times a year.

Chris Meyer for animals. This guy is great!! Knives we've corroberated on have been in
BLADE, KNIVES ANNUALS and KNIVES POI V.

My experience is that makers love to see their knives engraved. Many people are buying
the Mosaic Damascus bolstered knives, not me.
I'll take an engraved knife any time, and it's not always more expensive.

I'll try to do some scans and post a Photopoint link. If you want contact information for these engravers let me know.

Another person that is doing some terrific engraving along with knifemaking is Bailey Bradshaw. I do not have any pictures on my site that focus on his engraving, but I do have knives that are engraved by him on there. Make sure and check his work out at the Blade show.
