I'm going to start taking Sayoc Kali private lessons and wanted to get some feedback on your thoughts and experience with Sayoc Kali. How does it compare to other forms of Kali?

Thanks!

Art M,

Have you check out www.sayoc.com ????

I am currently training with Guro Ricardo Kayanan. I have also been studying Sayoc for about a year. Personally "I love it". I have train in other systems. Not that they were bad, they just didn't fit in for what I wanted. Sayoc has done that. I don't think you will be disappointed. Who will you be training under, if that's OK to ask.

I wish you luck in you training,

Brian Everett

in NYC, I'd strongly recommend Sayoc training with Guro Jeff.

his website is: tribalbladefightingarts.com

It is good solid training in bladecraft and very adpative to various armed and unarmed scenarios. It's immediate focus on the knife exclusively as a training tool differs from other forms of Kali I have learned, which started out with stick progressing to some type of bolo / sword variant of espada y daga. The emphasis on projectile weapons and whip as alternative training is, also, intriguing and refreshing. The targeting in Sayoc is very specific to vascular and muscle groups and does not just have techniques focused around "defanging the snake" or angles. The style's flexibility seems to allow it to be easily integrated into other arts or styles. Good luck with your search.

I was reading a chapter in a Mark Wiley book on Filipino Fighting Arts. And it mentioned that Sayoc Kali is mostly weapon training. I thought that most Filipino arts included both weapons technique and empty hand? Does anyone have experience with this? Thanks.

If you see the knife it's weapons based. If you don't see the knife it's empty hand.

...there is a lot more to a knife than just a knife just like there is a lot more to empty hand than empty hand. Of course, after awhile a knife is just a knife and empty hand is just empty hand. Am I making sense here?

=) I know friend. It's a saying that I got from Guro Jeff, and I must say, it's pretty catchy. =)
