i just got the Glock 78 field knife and it was mentioned that it was balanced so it can be thrown. i have thrown it into my fence a few times and the tip is slightly bent. Also it didnt come very sharp. it is a cool knife but isnt what i expected out of glock. My BK17 remains my favorite. What are your thoughts and opinions?

Pretty sure they were designed to be used for chopping, prying, and fighting. From what I heard, they're meant to be paired with a smaller utility knife/multitool for actual cutting tasks.

Glock knives are knives designed for soldiers who don"t give a hoot about knives. They are designed for the avarage soldier to be used to open cans, crates, cut stuff and maybe as a weapon. But it's not a knife knifenuts go crazy about. It's basically build for the grunt.
It's sturdy but uses a mediocre ( in our view) steel. I don't believe that the knife was designed as a knife throwing weapon. 95% of the grunts don't know how to throw a knife to be used as a weapon. And why throw a weapon at your adversary anyway?

very good points, i had never thrown a knife but when i found out it was a possibility i had to try it, it definitely is a grunts tool or weapon but idk i kinda expected a bit more, but i guess if you factor in the price its a steal, i think i paid 25 dollars for it and its well worth that in my opinion

Some people love these knives. But I am not one of them. I had one for quite a while: could not find an application where it would be useful. I did not think about throwing though! You might be right on there!

You can get a Cold Steel True Flight Thrower for a comparable price. From what I hear, a lot of people like to use it for bushcrafting.

You can pry the plastic cap off of the end and it will reveal a socket that will fit a Steyr AUG rifle (I lifted the rifle info from Wiki, not sure if that is 100%).

You can booger up the handle and the cap doing this, I just chucked mine. You can put a paracord loop or something through the hole that goes through the socket.

I like the sheath and latch, it is solid. I also like the beltloop that you can slide open. I don't have my scales handy, but it weighs in at about 7 Oz. Almost forgot, has a bottle opener on it also!

Interesting knife for the $$.

I've had one for years, it can take a serious beating and makes for a pretty good thrower. It's not the greatest but very functional as a tool.

The tang is what is keeping me from buying this knife...

How strong do you guys think this knife is?

Well, I bet it was not easy to remove that handle.

As for tough, I doubt you could break one in real use.

I have had, mine for a few years and it is still going strong. I have thrown it countless times, stuck it on a pole to throw as a spear, battoned, used it to pry, and the only that has happened is the coating came off. The only way I can see the handle coming off is if you cut it off. After some reprofiling it actually holds a decent edge.

It's a beater, doesn't come sharp but can take a fair edge.
Sawback teeth are too wide to be efficient, but they CAN saw.
Never built for throwing, dunno where you got that from.
As noted, the tip will bend a bit before it'll break, they're hardened to about 55 Rc.

Tang is not an issue for most uses the knife will be put to.
Poor design for processing meat.
Passable design as a fighter.
You can dig with it & feel no guilt.

Definitely not made to be in the same class as a BK17.

It's apparently balanced for throwing, so it's an option in case you need to for whatever reason.

I'm pretty sure the Austrians didnt design the knife for throwing.
I dont think that throwing knives is in the Austrian Army 'manual of arms.'
I might be mistaken though.

Ive had a Glock field knife for decades.
Its a sturdy ugly knife buildt to a budget.
Nothing about the knife will 'speak' to the knife afficionado. Its just not sexy. Does what it says on the tin though. The Glock field knife has a special place in my heart.
As was mentioned, I dont think these will generally be broken when used for the purpose, they were intended for (utility knife).
In my opinion, its not a fighting knife per se.
Fighting with knives is smiply not something dwelled upon let alone taught in most European armies.
Im speaking about the average grunts here.

theres a video on youtube where a guy tries to destroy it and it takes alot, it feels like a sturdy knife regardless of the odd tang choice

im not saying it was built to throw, as far as i know it was built to be just a general use tool, but it is balanced which gives it the option to be thrown, not saying its the smartest idea though. it is a beater and its cheap but strong. i think its a cool knife to toy around with a bit, im definately going to put it through its paces
