Just wondering what everyone's thoughts on the new Buck 113 Ranger were? I've never owned a Buck with the standard Buck 420HC steel. I have one Vanguard from Cabelas with the S30V which I love. My wife bought the 113 as a surprise for Christmas. I really like the smaller size compared to the Vanguard. Also, I noticed that the sheath had a folded sheet of black plastic down in the sheath where the blade rests. I am supposed to remove this once I start carrying the knife? Is it in there to protect the sheath from the blade? Kinda new to Buck's but eager to learn.
Thanks,
Jed

Hi Jed, I'm a fan of the 113 myself. There are "better" steels out there, but you'll not be disappointed with the 420HC.
The plastic liner is there to protect the sheath from the blade as you suspect. As long as it's in there right, it works fine. You say it's folded? Does it fit against the leather all the way around the inside of the sheath like a tube or is it flattened against one side?

Yes, keep the plastic where it is......it protects the sheath and YOU.

Ranger is a great little knife, no doubt about it.

Although knife steel does vary on individual knives, I predict you'll find the 420HC to give service almost as good as the S30V.

I Love my 113's...the grind on them is very nice and they take a very keen edge... I find the handle offers a few grip options and visually it has beatifull lines... The deep belly gives a decent amount of edge for it's blade length.

They're also great knives to customize!

I love the 113. With my big paw, I wish the handl was a little longer but it served me just fine dressing a deer this season. Was hoping to give it a little more action but whataya gonna do.

The 113 ranger is IMO one of the most practical and useable fixed blades buck offers while it's blade profile is simple it is ideal for field dressing and skinning Medium sized game the sheath also is pretty nice and while made in mexico ( I don't really hold this against Buck a lot of leather goods are made there ) seems to be of decent quality.

I definitely like the lines and looking forward to getting one.
