have you handled any midtech/production knives of custom re-makes (think laconico/rassenti) that were as good or better than the custom? would like to hear the knife geek community thoughts.

I just bought a Pena X Series Rhino (made by Reate) which is a production version of the Pena custom. And I am extremely impressed with it's level of fit and finish and overall build quality. Truly excellent. I can only imagine how awesome (and expensive) the custom version is.

Chris Reeve Knives are as good as any custom or better.Being custom does not mean they have better tolerances, fit & finish or action.Cheers.

I think mid-techs are generally better than the customs. It depends on the maker of course, but ay of them that are hand finishing their knives will have small (or large) inconsistencies in them. A high quality production model using state of the art manufacturing will be more consistent. It won't be unique however.

I’ve been enjoying the Reate and WE OEM knives. Too many to list, but quality is so great on them. Also love the CKF Rassenti offerings!

So far I have found the custom version to be better, but that isn't to say that there is anything wrong with the mid tech. The customs tend to be more refined, but at the pricing point of the mid techs, they can be easier to use(or make users).
The one exception is Strider. I prefer their production versions to the customs. I am sure others may have a different opinion or like neither.
But I certainly haven't tried everything out there by a long shot.
