I am wanting to get some shapton stones. I have watched a lot of jason b and harrelson stanley videos. I currently have the DMT xc,c,f,and ef stones. I have an atoma 140. I also have the naniwa aotoshi 2k stone. I am sharpening a lot of german steel knives and need faster cutting waterstones because the edges are usually in poor shape. I also plan on sharpening some japanese stainless and carbon blades in the future.

The shapton glass kit contains a 500,2k, and 16k stone with a holder. You save about $50 dollars vs buying separately. I already have a stone holder but wouldnt mind a shapton specific one. Do I even need to get the 16k stone at this point? Would i be better off just buying the double thick 500 and 2k shapton glass stone and forget about the kit? I also see the shapton pro 2k recommended frequently.

The kit is nice and it saves you a bit of money but, if you don't have an Atoma 140 you will need one. The Glass stones will need to be lapped after every use as most waterstones but it's a bit more critical with these.

I would say the Atoma 140 with the Shapton 500 (regular thickness) and 2k would be a better option. Make your own strop if you don't already have one and you will be able to handle most anything thrown at you.

I picked up the 3 stone shapton kit with the 16k.... I have not sharpened too many knives yet, but I like the 16k and am happy to have it. It does a nice polish. With your DMT stones, I think this may be a good addition. I was thinking to get the DMT stones to match my shaptons just for fun and to try diamonds.
