My great grandfather was a barber and passed down an extensive collection of straight razors, hones, strops, etc.
Over the years I’ve tried and sharpened with stones, hones and stropping.
I’m assuming it is my technique or lack of...but I have found nothing finishes better with good sharpness/retention (for me) than an old brown Franz Swaty hone and some Dawn. Ironically probably the least expensive, I don’t really even know the grit.
I swear I can finish an edge of CPM154, S30, M4 and even D2 on it better than I can stropping.
Is the obvious answer reality? I suck at stropping?
Any thoughts, experience, suggestions or criticisms are greatly appreciated.
Also, I’m new here and am blown away with the wealth of knowledge and resources!!!
