I am thinking of buying a BK9, and would like some opinions on it. It will be a survival knife/ camp knife. Has anyone tried field dressing big game, or butchering with it? Opinions please. Thank you.

Do a search or two for the BK9 or Combat Bowie. Its a great knife and has been discussed a lot.

I would prefer a smaller knife for most any field dressing or butchering, but it would work.

Any time I think of buying a BK9, I always add a BK11 with it. The "9" is a good camp/survival blade but when you add the "11" to it, you have an all-around package. The "9" by itself will handle hunting chores but it really is too big for the tasks. When the BK11 was designed it was tested on cleaning deer and performed well.
I guess this is my way of saying, "anomad knows what he is talking about!".

The only thing that I don't like about this knife is what people always praise it for - chopping. The steel is excellent, balance wonderful, etc., everything else about it is great, but I think the flat ground plus the thickness just doesn't chop wood well for me. Plants, no problem.

Most everyone else praises it's chopping ability, so I fully admit that it could be my technique, but every time I chop wood, it sticks really tight on every chop.

It really bums me out, because I think that Beckers are probably the best deal in "high performance" steels. Yes, I think their steel beats most everything else in edge holding and toughness.

Having said all that, I still keep it in my truck, I think that it's a helluva knife at "MSRP", much less some of the better Internet deals.

I also agree the BK 11 is great. So is the CU/7, the Camp Bowie, and the Companion. I'm really loving the Companion these days.

I suggest you get not only the BK0 but the BK7 as well as the BK11.

For those kind of prices, you can't really complain. Besides, they are better than most knives in their range.
