I was cruising around the Leatherman website and found that they designed a "kid specific" multi tool called the Leap. its in bright colors, kinda bulbus tools and a removable knife blade. As a young man (22) no kids and limited experience with kids, i was wondering what yall thought about it. I think it would be cool because if you take the blade out and the take it to school they (hopefully) won't get expelled.

The product name is the Leap for those who may be interested. More info is available here: http://leap.leatherman.com/.

First thing that comes to my mind is if Leatherman can create a MT with a user-installable blade, why can't they create a MT with a user-UNINSTALLABLE blade? I need a blade in my Leatherman like I need another hole in my head! I realize that the blade in the Leap is a one-time install, but why shouldn't it be able to work both ways?

Thanks for catching me not mentioning the name I changed the OP. I love having a blade on my MT because then i can have a loaner blade and i also have a blade that i don't have to worry about destroying because its like a "bonus" blade. I would love to see a juice size MT with removable blade so i can fly with it.

You're not alone! In my case it would be a Micra, but same general idea. Sure beats taking a dremel to the blade to make it TSA compliant.

I recall hearing or reading that they wanted to make the Leap have a removable blade but couldn't do it in a way that guaranteed the kid's safety, and didn't require a bunch of tools. so they opted for simplicity in that case.
I like the idea as it foments the idea of a multi-tool as a TOOL before kids get the idea that knives are weapons. Its a multi-tool I'd give to a 5 or 6 year old, especially for "helping out" around the house/yard. Probably not ever be able to take it to school, but who knows, maybe the world will get less paranoid. One can hope.

It seems like a good idea. If you go camping with your kids you may want to get them a "kid friendly" knife, but parents should remember that no matter how many safety features this has, at the end of the day a knife is a knife and it can be dangerous for your kids.

However it seems like a good concept, I wonder how it'll hold up.

I doubt the world will get less paranoid, my old school definitely won't, an old teacher of mine I'm friendly with told me a kid nearly got stabbed with some kid's knife, so I doubt they'll be letting kids bring their pocket knives to school anytime soon

. It's horrible that knives are seen as weapons not tools, even at my work place people are always on edge when they find out I carry a multi-tool.
