I've always liked Kershaw knives and I've owned many in the past couple of decades or so and I still have a few to this day. They've always been an innovative company but some examples could be of spotty quality now and then and most suffered from the "less than sharp" syndrome.

I've read good reports lately of the new Kershaw knives. With all the hoopla surrounding their JYD1 and JYD2 models, I decided to try a new one.

The JYD 1 & 2 are nice knives but the one that stood out in my mind was the Needs Work. I just love wharncliffe blades and this thing looked like an ideal folding kitchen or utility knife.

I went ahead and ordered one from our friends at New Graham and received it today. What can I say except this knife is a winner! The flipper is placed just right for me and unlike what some folks reported, my particular AO example snaps open with authority!

I know some folks don't like AO openers and I admit, I'm of the persuasion of manual openers myself. However, this thing is so smooth and fun to open, I can't stop myself! :) Now understand, this is not my first AO opener as I still have an original Ricochet, Model #1520. This Kershaw AO opener is light years ahead of it!

Some other highlights of this knife are that this knife is sharper than any Kershaw I've ever owned in the past. It is shaving sharp! Also, these new Polyimide scales are so superior to the usual FRN scales on most inexpensive knives, that there's no comparison. I love this stuff! It has a quality feel and they are so expertly fitted to the knife that I've had custom knives where the scales didn't have a fit this good and that's saying something!

I'll admit that Spyderco has been my favorite production knives since I purchased my first one circa 1986. I still love Spydies but their quality has become slightly sporadic. This Kershaw with it's razor sharp edge, quality build and wonderful price, could push my preference to Kershaws over Spydercos! Great job Kershaw!

P.S. I also want to give Ken Onion credit where credit is due. Great job on your designs and innovation Ken!

I recently got a "Needs Work" also, highly impressed, Kershaw oozes quality, and the Onion designs are superb !
Definetly a winning combination !

Got a Needs Work for my best buddy and a Lahar for myself. Both are great designs. Kershaw is a 1st rate company in my book!

I have for almost 3 decades been totally impressed with the quality and the out of the box sharpness of Kershaw knives, I haven't had any spotty quality , only spotless Quality !! The only ones I ever heard problems about were some of the first run ZDP189 leeks and they took care of them instantly, glad you like your Needs work , I need to get one !!

Hi Dave,
Glad to hear of your good fortune with Kershaw! I can't compete with 30 years of purchasing Kershaws but I can come close. I also have a couple of Kershaws that I love that are well over 30 years old even though I didn't originally purchase them.

There were reports of spotty quality control that were well documented here in the past. Let me also say that I was mostly away from the knife world for a couple of years up until about 6 months ago.

That aside, I'm not trying to bash Kershaw at all. My original post attests to that. I'm saying these new Kershaw models are wonderful! Like others have stated elsewhere, I'm amazed that Kershaw can sell quality of this nature at these reasonable prices.

This Needs Work model is a true winner and thanks Kershaw for a superb knife!

Just got my "Needs Work" and i am super impressed with it. It's a truly unique knife that is like no other out there. It opens very smooth and fast, and the blade is the sharpest of any factory knife I have ever seen. The blade has a super thin hollow grind and just screaming sharp.

The only drawback i can even think of is that I've had to kinda get used to the handle size and shape, because my hands are large and it only fits 3 fingers. Now that I'm used to using and handling it, it feels quite good.

The handle material is wonderful. It's stylish and feels so nice. The fit and finish on this knife is perfect. The pocket clip is very stylish....somethin you'd see on folders costing hundreds. The whole knife seems like it would cost hundreds, but is very affordable. Solid as a knife could be.

I love it.

I just recently purchased my first two Kershaws. A Storm and then a Storm II. Both are beautiful knives built with outstanding quality! Kershaw definately has themselves a new fan! I can"t wait to buy another! VWB.

i recently got a needs work folder....it is my first and only kershaw to date....it won't be my last....it is also my first ao.....i had a little trouble with thte assited opening after i sharpened it....it just didn't seem to work right...i think i got some grit or something in the mechanism.....the next day when it dried it was pretty much fine.....closing it now it doesn't have alot of spring in the blade but it is easier to close so.....i think the torsion bar is probably not working at 100 percent but it opens fine and is actually safer to close now....ryan
