Thinking of acquiring one of these unique knives.

Was wondering what the Spyderco regulars thought of them. I can't decide if I like it or not.:D

Thanks.

comfortable grip, but strange proportions.

the choil is large, so i found the cutting edge to be lacking.

i like the ball lock, but i think there are better designs using it than the phoenix.

I have been in the same boat. I like the look of the Phoenix but doubt that I would carry it much. I don't have it in my budget for another cool-looking knife that I would not end up carrying.

But I do keep coming back to it because I like the design and the look for some reason.

Interesting, striking design, and definitely one of Spyderco's more high end, collector oriented pieces. Looks real nice when on display. On the other hand, at least for me, it has several points against it as a user.

Perhaps the most critical for me personally is that, because I have a touch of arthritis in my hands, ball locks are difficult for me to close with my hands at their best - clean, dry, and warm. They become virtually impossible if my hands are cold, wet, or oily. That alone put's the Phoenix at the bottom of my scale for "carryability".

A complaint both more specific to the Phoenix and more likely to bother others would be its several sharp corners. While they may add to the knife's sensuous looks, they make carrying and using it less comfortable. A number of folks who carry a Phoenix have taken a file to those corners.

And, as a southpaw who generally removes clips and prefers tip down carry when he does not, the Phoenix's right hand tip up only clip that leaves a nasty divot in the scale if removed is another negative for me.

It is the beauty.
I wasn't impressed with this knife from the pictures. Fortunately I was able to handle it. It is gorgeous. Grip is good, but some sharp edges on the handle. No problem with lock, actually I like ball lock on few of my knives more than caged lock on M2.

I find that the grip is irritating to my hand. the back of the handle is sharp, it has a point like ending that presses into the inside of my hand.

I really like the looks a lot, it kind of gives me an Italian mob feeling (don't ask..)
If it would have been smaller I would have considered it a gentleman's folder, but it is a little too big for that imo.

It's very sharp from the factory and the tip of the blade comes dangerously close to catching the inside of your hand when doing a one handed closing (because of the ball lock you will change your grip) and it opened up mine a little

The quality and fit and finish are excellent, no play, very solid, nice shape, good looks! I really like the way you can dig into the choil and manipulate the knife. It feels rather heavy and I like that. On top of that, the ball lock is a littlebit of extra eye candy.

So only one complaint about it (the handle) but as said here, some people file off the point. The rest is just great about it. I love it

IMHO, it has very classy look to it. I prefer this style of ball lock to the new ones on the Manix2. It opens and closes very smooth. The use of nylon washers may help too.

The lock up is solid. Makes a nice click when it engages.

The F&F is spot on, as you would expect from a higher end Spydie. No gaps between the Ti liners and back spacer at all. (not sure if the back spacer is Ti or SS)

The sharp edges that others have mentioned were not an issue for me while opening and closing it a few times.

The micarta scales are polished and provide a better grip than one would think from polished scales. Of course, the large choil helps too.

The clip positioning lends itself easier to draw from the pocket. It does show the but end of while clipped to your pocket, and with white scales, you let everyone know you have a Spydie in your drawers :D, but being white, its a little more sheeple friendly.

It also looks so much better in person.

This thread needs pics...

I love the bladeshape, but the handle & inserts kill it for me. If the knife had nested steel liners (Like the Gayle Bradley) and they were covered in some thin G-10 like the Chinese Spydercos, I would love it.
