thinking about picking one of these up, anyone have any experience with the knife in either finish or both?

Which finish do you prefer?
how does the knife handle?
how does it cut?
How does ZT's Elmax hold up to use?
Also how do you like the spring assist? does it flip good without it? or is the spring needed for the detent?

Things like that, and pictures are always welcome

I've owned a stonewash 0566 since January. The blade tip was ground off-center and there was a plunge spur near the serial number. Fixed both defects on a diamond block. It's a good blade, now.

Jimping on the back was sharp on the scale side; smoothed it with a small stone.

The torsion bar ( assist spring ) broke within five months. I refuse to invest any more time on this knife. I use it to clean the gutters. Pass on it.

The 0770cf I own is a mass production gem. Think it was $151.95 at KW.

Just picked up a Blur with black washed Elmax. Love the finish and the steel cuts a lot of cardboard before needing a touch up.

hmmm interesting experience newdebate, has me second guessing it but i wonder if that was just your single knife and maybe not the model as a whole

I'll chime in with some thoughts. I've only owned the stonewashed 0566, though. Overall, I think the knife represents an incredible value. You get a great quality piece backed by the awesome ZT warranty. To answer your questions:

1. I purchased the stonewashed version earlier this year, and think they did a great job with it. It hides scratches well and gives it a nice, roughed up look without looking too worn. The blackwash looks great as well, and I've been tempted to pick one of those up. Anyways, here's a pic.

2. The knife handles great. Hinderer knows how to design an ergonomic knife, and ZT is top notch in their execution. This model was designed with EDC in mind, and for that reason it rides low in the pocket and feels thin in hand, while still giving you a substantial grip. I wear size M gloves, and this thing feels great in the hand. As long as you remember it's a stainless steel framelock, you should be fine with the weight. It's a little on the heavy side for some users, but not for me.

3. Thanks to the blade being ground from thinner stock, it actually cuts surprisingly well. A lot of people complained about how thick the 0550 and 0560 blade are, and ZT definitely delivered a thinner blade. I cut everything from sushi to drywall with mine, and it never disappointed me. Keep in mind, it's basically a scaled down 0560 so it still has a substantial blade that will hold up to some prying and other hard use tasks.

4. I've owned an 0561, two 0550s, an 0551, and an 0801 and I can honestly say I've never had a problem with ZT's Elmax. It stands up to what I use these knives for, and does a good job at resisting corrosion and retaining it's edge. It also sharpens up pretty easily for me, but YMMV.

5. This is where it gets a little tricky. I personally didn't like the assisted opening, and took the torsion bar out immediately. I'm grateful that ZT gave us the option to de-assist the knife, as it works much smoother without the AO. Plenty of people complained that the knife was hard to deploy. Truthfully, it all comes down to technique. This rides on PB washers and is a Hinderer design. His models require more of a push button deployment, where you build up pressure with your finger and then fire it out. Using this method, I have 100% deployment every time. Check out the 0560s and his actual XM knives. Notice where the jimping on the flipper is? That's where your finger is supposed to go. Also, you need to make sure your other fingers aren't pressing down on the lockbar.

All in all, I would highly recommend this knife. Considering you can find them now for $120 and below, I think that's a steal. As far as which finish, all I can say is that the blackwash will hide wear better than the stonewash. In the end, it's all personal preference. Here a couple more pics for ya.

wow grownstar, thank you for the very detailed write up!

im definitely still interested in this knife and from what you said it leaves me to believe dman62 had an isolated issue

The weight thing is hardly an issue for me and extra ounce or two i dont even notice
I am on board with the de assisting because i feel it is not needed
the other big thing was the elmax, because i have heard mixed reviews about ZT's Elmax and wasnt sure how it was going to hold up, but it looks to be doing great for you, it seems that i might be picking one of these up when i get paid again, so for that my wallet doesnt like you but i appreciate your insight, haha

i guess the only two issues i have which arent really issues, is that im not much of a flipper guy i prefer the thumbstuds, but that might change who knows (i havent had a flipper in a while)
and that i have heard that the black wash finish adds a little bit of drag when cutting through things, probably not noticeable but who knows lol

^^Google Pete Gray.

Thanks for that, Dave. The dude does awesome work.

And Mr Krieg, you don't have to thank me, bro. I just love talking knives haha. I could go all day on this stuff.

As for your concerns, there are plenty of people who are able to use the blade stops (which is what they are designed for) as thumbstuds. It all comes down to patience, and tuning the knife just right to your liking. Small tweaks to the pivot, as well as cleaning and lubing the insides, all help with deployment. I'm not saying the knife is perfect, but it works for me as well as several others on here. Have you gone through the thread by member Ruudr? There's a lot of great stuff in there...

And just to make things more comicated, bladehq is showing a 0566 blackwash carbon fiber coming soon. I love the 0566. I really don't need to but damn ZT knows how to tug at my wallet.

Well I just bought one, couldn't pass up the deal for 115 I saw, my wallet doesn't like me and my girlfriend might be a tad upset, but either way I got a pretty sweet knife coming my way!

I'll be picking up a 566 Blackwash to accompany the stonewashed version I've been carrying for almost 6 months.
