Thread in the Political Forum will not load

I cannot get the thread, "Hmmm", in the Political Forum to load. I get a Microsoft Error message that gives as a reason, "Unspecified Error". I note that the icon envelope has been colsed and has a black dot in it, shades of Treasure Island, by Robert Louis Stevenson. Can anyone tell mewhat is going on?

The dot means it's a thread you've posted in. Whenever a web page refuses to load, or locks up your browser, or crashes your system -- it's not the web page; it's almost always your browser. Birds gotta fly, fish swim, cats vomit -- browsers crash. Reloading the page might work; restarting your browser is often enough; if not then restart Windoze.

If the same page causes the same problem again after a cold start ... then you're probably using an old browser; it's time to update it. If a cold start fixes it, it doesn't count.

It isn't just one browser; they all crash. Newer versions aren't always upgrades ... the current version of Netscape sucks. The latest version of Explorer seems more stable than the last version ... a little bit. Maybe someday they'll design a web browser that's reliable, but I'm not holding my breath while I wait.

I use a Dell Optiplex GX1 machine with a Pentium III running Windows NT and MS Internet Explorer. I have been using this system for about a year and the original post was the first time that it had happened. However, over on SwordForums, almost every time that I try to make a long post, it will accept only a part of the post and then I have to go into edit and then go back to the initial entry page and do a "copy" and "paste" exercise. Would these problems be related? The SFI tech people were not able to help, only to suggest the patch that I use.

When posting problems with threads, please post the URL's to them - I don't have enough time to search out each and every thread in a busy forum, and doing this speeds my helping you

Kevin

Works just fine for me - what browser are you using? Are you surfing through a proxy server? Have you tried hitting shift + reload / refresh?

Okay, I have a Dell Optiplex GX1 with a Pentium III processor in it using Windows NT as its system. I have no idea what the server is, but the browser is Windows IE, but I don't know what level. I have, indeed, tried Control/Refresh, as well as both a Hot Reboot and a Cold Reboot, none of which seem to work. Sometimes, going away for a while and then coming back lets whatever the problem is resolve itself, sometimes not. Shutting down for the night and rebooting in the morning has always cured it. But the problem in http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=174719&pagenumber=2 is interesting in that, while page 2 will not load, page 3 will. "Fascinating," as Mr. Spock used to say.

I have this problem only on my work system, not on my home system, which runs Windows 2000 and IE through DellNet.

BTW, welcome back, Spark. Sorry that I have to do it this way.

Seems to be a problem with IE 5.5... submiting the trouble report up the line.

I dunno. I looked through http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=174719&pagenumber=2 thinking maybe somebody posted some nonstandard html code or something ... didn't see anything that looked unusual ... and the last post in the thread is by you, Hugh. So, um ... you could read the thread with no problem until you posted in it, and then your own post broke it? But only for you? I don't know, maybe you're not the only one that thread won't load for; people don't always post bug reports....

Beats me.

For what it's worth, I've been running Explorer 6 for several weeks now and I think it's better than version 5 was, and seems to be more stable (it still crashes, but not as often). If you haven't upgraded already, upgrading now might fix the problem.

It must be pretty durn annoying to be in the middle of an argument and suddenly find you can't read page two of the thread. :(

Over lunch, I downloaded update 5.5 to my MS IE and I seem to have cured the problem. The system here at work won't let me download IE 6.0.

Try I.E. 6.0 at home. MS did a great job on that release. Best version of I.E. yet and I am not a big MS groupie, but I am very happy with the improvemnts they made :).
